Motorola w376g TracFone Review – Part 3

Motorola w376g – Part 3 of my in-depth review

This is a follow-up to my w376g review part 1 and part 2. (Click here for part 1 or click here for part 2)This post picks up where I left off with part 2. If you enjoy this series of reviews, you might also want to sign up to receive email updates when I publish a new post to this blog, alerting you about new deals on TracFone airtime and phones, new bonus codes, and other topics related to TracFone use and saving money. I generally post new content 2 or 3 times per week, so I won’t be filling up your inbox every day. If you are a TracFone user, it is my goal to save you money and make your life easier. You can sign up for free updates here, and it’s easy to unsubscribe at any time if you change your mind.

Another link that might be helpful to you is my “best price on the Motorola w376g” page, if you’re on the lookout for the best price on this phone. When I find a new deal, I’ll create a post about on the blog, and update my “best price” page.

Alright, I’m finally wrapping up this series. When I set out to write this review, I didn’t intend on it being nearly so long. But, I kept coming up with new things that I thought people should know about, and the review kept growing. And since it’s the hot new phone of the moment for TracFone users, I’m sure other issues will come up in the future, and I’ll be here to discuss those as well. Anyway, on to the remainder of the review:

One thing that I forgot to mention previously on the review are the little indicator lights on the outside of the phone. The three indicators will light up to signal a new voice mail, new text message, or low battery. This is a pretty handy feature on the flip phone, and may save you some time opening and closing your phone. And, it looks pretty cool, too.

Another thing that a few people have asked me about is the charger for this phone. The end that connects to the phone is a mini-USB type plug, which is a becoming a fairly standard connector among many devices such as PDAs, digital cameras, GPS units and many newer cell phones. For many of these devices, that port functions as both a charger and a data transfer port. That way, the user can plug the device into a computer’s USB port to both charge the device, drawing power from the computer, and transfer info between the device and the computer. However, on this particular phone, data transfer is not allowed. Not only that, the phone will not even charge when connected to a computer USB port. This is not a big deal for me – I always plug my phone into the wall overnight 2-3 times a week anyway – but it may be a problem for some.

As a result of the limited data transfer, though, the only way you’ll be able to get pictures off the camera and onto your computer is by emailing them from your phone. That, too, has been glitchy for me, though. I really don’t foresee myself using this very much at all, but it would be nice to know it’s functional if I ever need to use it. So far, though, I haven’t been able to send a picture from the phone to either an email address or another phone. I may be doing something wrong, but there has also been some discussion of this on various forums around the web as well as from a couple of readers that have contacted me. So it looks like I’m not the only one having problems. Other users have reported that problem was corrected, either spontaneously or after filing a tech support request with TracFone. I will try to get in contact with TracFone and report the results here. I’m optimistic that it can be resolved. But for now, keep in mind it may be a hassle to get any pictures off your phone.

And, this brings me to my next point. If you happen to own this phone, and want to consult the user guide, it will probably save you some frustration if you don’t even bother. I don’t know if maybe TracFone/Motorola just assumed that by now everyone should know how to use the features on bluetooth-capable, web-enabled camera phones, but the manual is just a step above utterly worthless. If you have question about your w376g, you’ll be much better off searching the web or posting your question here and hoping another user can answer it, rather than spending any time looking through your instruction manual.

Finally, I feel obligated to mention this on all my TracFone reviews. I have been a Nokia 1100 user for 3+ years now, I think, and I keep hanging on to it for one specific reason – it is one of the only TracFone models that allows free incoming text messages. On the w376g, it will cost .3 units to receive an incoming SMS message (and more to receive MMS, although that’s not really my issue here). So if you are thinking of upgrading, but receive a lot of incoming texts every day, you’ll want to consider the costs.

Ok, wow, I just read back through the review and realized that I ended with a lot of criticisms there. I don’t want that to be the overall tone of the review, though, as I really am a big fan of the phone. I think that it is a great phone for making and receiving calls and has some cool features that make it much more fun than any other TracFone. Just know that some of these extras come with limitations, such as the limited data transfer capability.

Here’s a summary of what I do NOT like about the phone:

  • poor user guide
  • bluetooth might not work with some built-in handsfree systems in cars
  • the phone can’t be charged from a computer USB port
  • transferring pictures/sounds between the phone and a computer will require MMS messaging
  • FM radio requires a wired headset to function at all
  • it will cost you .3 units to receive a text (ok, this isn’t that big of a deal since all new TracFones work this way, but it’s my pet peeve so I’m putting it in my review!)
  • there is no voice dialing feature
  • Web browser button can be pushed accidentally; this may lead to units being deducted for web surfing you didn’t mean to do
  • Web broswer can be slow

Now, the positives:

  • Looks great
  • Sound quality and reception are very good
  • Camera is a nice feature to have handy
  • Bluetooth is very nice and worked well with my headset
  • Phone is solid, comfortable to use and carry, and fits in your pocket easily.
  • Even though the browser isn’t fast, at least it’s there if you want to check it out.
  • Supports mp3 ringtones
  • Includes double minutes for life – this alone is a $49.99 value.

The phone costs only $49.99 – compare this to the original price of the w370 ($79.99), and consider the extras (Web Browser, Bluetooth, Camera, Double Minutes for Life), and you are getting a LOT of value for your $49.99.

In conclusion, I think that this phone is a great buy for the price. While the list of “negatives” on this phone is fairly long, those are mainly, in my opinion, minor annoyances, and I included them here just to make sure that people are aware of them. On the other hand, I felt that this phone scored high marks on the areas that important to me – how it functions as a PHONE in general, and as a TracFone specifically. The sound quality and reception are very good, the phone looks nicer than any other TracFone handset available, and the double minute feature will save you a lot of money. If you are a TracFone user considering this phone for an upgrade, I say “Go for it.” And I’ll do my best on this blog to keep you updated on the best prices available for this phone. You can check out the current deals on the w376g here.

Finally, I’m sure there are parts of my review that some may disagree with me on, or questions that people still have. Please post them in the comments section, and I’ll do my best to respond in a timely manner.

    Found this site http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/viewthread/103433/#901386

used this to create a driver and can now charge my W376g at work using a standard usb cable.

    Hi Rich
Thanks so much for the input. I will definitely check it out and share more details in my next post.

  3. 5 Yww July 18, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Great writeup. May I suggest you do one on how to pair the w376g with a vehicle? I think it’s safe to say many people buying this is most likely for the bluetooth capability and the instruction booklet doesn’t go into any details on that. So far I have not been able to pair it with my car’s system even after I changed the passkey to “0000″ as you have pointed out. Thanks.

  4. 6 pbushx2 July 18, 2008 at 7:32 pm

    Hi Yww
That’s a great idea; unfortunately, I don’t own a vehicle with Bluetooth capability, so I’ll have to leave that for my readers. There has been some discussion of this issue on my previous posts – I’ll have to read back through it and see if I can piece together a decent post, then ask for comments. Stay tuned…

    Nice review!

One question, I read somewhere else that the dedicated button to launch the browser, is in a place that is poor, causing inadvertent launches, and thereby wasting $$$, and that this button con neither be disabled nor reassigned. Can you comment on this?

  6. 8 pbushx2 July 19, 2008 at 9:31 pm

    Hi Buel
You are correct about the button placement. I didn’t like that, but felt it was something I could get used to. I commented on it in part 1 of the review, here:

Great review! As a note bluetooth is not only on cars and computers but GPS units too. I just got a Magellan 4250 it also has bluetooth it would be nice if I had a blue tooth tracfone! Do you know if the bluetooth issues are due to tracfone mods to the phone? I know the Toyota Prius did not work with all bluetooth phones either. Like you I keep using my trusty 1100 phone for now.

  8. 10 pbushx2 July 20, 2008 at 7:35 am

    Hi Dave
I briefly covered the limited bluetooth function in part 2 of my review, here:
    http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/07/15/motorola-w376g-tracfone-review-part-2/
But, I haven’t found conclusive evidence about connecting to an add-on GPS unit such as yours. I MAY get a chance to test it sometime in the next 10 days, but maybe someone else can shed more light on this problem before I get a chance to.
Also, to answer your question, I believe that bluetooth may be limited by TracFone in order to prevent users from adding mp3 ringtones. I’m sure that TracFone would prefer that you buy your tones from them – it’s probably a nice little addition to their bottom line.

    Pbush2 -

This is a fantastic blog. Thank You very much.

I agree with you that the user’s guide that comes with the phone is very poor. I found the following link on the Tracfone site by searching for “W376G PDF”. This guide seems quite extensive to me.

I bought the phone B/4 finding your site. I am almost completely satisfied. I too am having problems with sending Pictures using MMS. Is it possible i am not in a region that can handls digital signals. My last Motorola phone allowed me to choose between digital or analog networks.

I have contacted Tracfone multiple times. They keep telling me to try it again in 24 hours and call back. If you find an answer, please post it. I would really like to be able to E-Mail Pictures.

    Thanks.
    - Dave

the shortcut to the PDF instruction manual did ot work. I could not find it using the Tracfone search. Can you verify it and send me the correct location? trying to find out how to do a redial function.
The user guide that comes with the phone is just about useless in trying to find out how to use the various functions.

  10. 15 pbushx2 July 20, 2008 at 11:05 pm

    Hi everyone
I just received the following question from a reader, and I’m hoping someone here will be able to help her out with setting up the bluetooth function with her vehicle. Here’s what she wrote:

I purchased a new ford edge in april and am excited about the new feature. I paired the phone to the car with no problem but it doesn’t have the aut phonebook download. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get the phonebook up and running so I can use the voice activation. Can you please tell me how to do this or where I can get the info online?

  11. 18 Sharon July 21, 2008 at 11:48 am

    Loved the review.
One question, I was told that I can not take old numbers out of my old phone which were saved on the SIM card and place them into the new phone. I think i read in one of the replies that is something some did on the Tracfone site. Is that true?

  12. 19 Dick July 22, 2008 at 9:24 pm

I just got my new W376g, today, so now, I read the revues.
From your blog,I believe I’m going to be happy with this phone.

As far as Blue Tooth is concerned, I had no trouble hooking my Garmin c550 GPS to the W376g following the scant info in the TracFone guide.
When my wife drives the car, she uses a Sony-Erickson Z525a with the GPS. We do have to change the blue tooth settings in the GPS, to recognize the phone we are using. A simple task.

Thank you for a great revue

  13. 20 BK July 23, 2008 at 8:41 am

Speaking of your pet peeve of incoming texts for .3 units, do you think Tracfone will come out with text bundles for Tracfone like Virgin Mobile does?

  14. 21 pbushx2 July 23, 2008 at 9:02 am

    BK –
I hope so, but who knows with them? I actually went so far as to contact the company to ask if they would consider doing that, but their only comment was that future products cannot be disclosed due to confidentiality. What I was thinking would be a good approach is something like the double for life card – spend so much up front, then all future texts are free. Probably wishful thinking, though.

  15. 22 Bee July 24, 2008 at 8:59 am

Just wanted to let you know that TracFone’s V170 is like the Nokia 1100 in that it also allows free incoming text messages.

  16. 23 BK July 24, 2008 at 11:13 am

    I agree.

Also: NEW PHONE ALERT: LG 600g

It features camera, external screen, bluetooth, and its a flip phone.

You can find it on the activate/reactivate page.

Here’s a link to the main page for it.

  17. 24 ortizmro July 24, 2008 at 1:27 pm

I have this phone and so far I like it. Except for one thing. Battery life. Three days and the battery needs recharge. To anyone else that has this phone – is this typical? I was surprised – thought it would last a little longer than that. This has been my experience for several cycles now…

  18. 25 BDL July 25, 2008 at 10:35 am

I got my phone today and tried doing the switch online. Got a message saying I’d need a new sim card and to call customer service. I was really hoping to avoid that part, but it went fairly quickly and almost painlessly LOL. Just disappointed I’m not using the phone right now! Had to go through this the last two times I wanted to transfer number and units to a new phone. Oh well, just a few more days :-)

  19. 26 Kevin July 25, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Hey, great review, I’m considering buying this phone. One question, does this model send text messages quickly? With my current Tracfone (Motorola v176) it takes a few seconds after I press send for the phone to send the message. The screen says “Please Wait” then deducts units, then “Sending Message,” Then “Message Sent”, the whole process taking around 10 seconds. I was wondering whether this process is reduced at all or what?

Also, the vibrate feature on my v176 is very loud. Is the vibrate on the w376g softer or what?

Great review, it answered a lot of questions I had about this phone.

  20. 27 Karl July 26, 2008 at 1:13 am

I have been searching the web for days and came across the actual manual for the phone. Should be much more useful then the useless crap it came with.

  21. 29 Storyteller July 26, 2008 at 9:39 am

    Hi all,
I’m just setting up my 376g and it seems to be a great phone. I don’t care about special ringtones, just ring–loudly! :)
I’d like to be able to move my contact numbers from my old v170 to the new one. I’ve read though the reviews and comments and if the tips to do this are there I’ve overlooked them.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

  22. 30 Carleton July 27, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I really ejoyed the reviews. All three parts. I just ordered the 376g today to replace my Nokia. Can’t wait to get it. On the FM radio are units being used when listening to the radio? Where can I get the ear piece I need to make the reception work on the FM radio. Will the carrying case for the w370 fit the w376g? I noticed no accessories for the 376g yet. Thanks! Look forward to more reviews.

  23. 31 Aaron July 28, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Help Tracfone, I bought the w376g and it worked great for days, BUT then it started. It no longers shows the name or the picture of the person calling you. It just shows “incoming call and the number”. Contacted Tracfone and they said they will send a replacement, I know it will be a refurb phone and not new like I bought. Also I bought 2 other w376g phones for family members and now one of them is doing the same but the other one is still working great. is this an issue anyone else is having a problem with?? the light rings green if the caller is is the phonebook and orange if not. But now it just rings orange and no matter if you have a pic or ringtone for the caller it will not show or play it, just incoming call + number

  24. 32 redhawk July 28, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Does anyone know what mobile charger model is right for the W376g?

  25. 33 Pen July 30, 2008 at 9:24 pm

I have the V170 and the sound quality is horrible, does this phone have better sound quality or is it just a limitation with tradfones?

  26. 34 pbushx2 July 30, 2008 at 9:36 pm

I believe that the w376g does have much better sound quality – I wrote about this in part 1 of the review – http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/07/08/motorola-w376g-tracfone-review-part-1/

  27. 35 Steve July 31, 2008 at 12:34 am

For a charger you just need a “Mini USB” type charger, check ebay you can get them real cheap.

  28. 36 Skip July 31, 2008 at 10:53 am

Upgraded to the w376g, from my nokia. Tried to change it all over on the internet. (same phone #, and minutes I had left). Said had no record slim card # , so tried to just activate it, and keep the nokia as 2nd phone. Said same thing, had to call. I bought it from tracfone web site. Have to wait up to 2 weeks for new slim card. At first they said I would have no phone, they would take it all from the nokia, and have to wait for the new slim card to activate the new phone. Then I raised H#@%. What kind of S$$$ you selling (ECT, ECT). So now I can use the nokia till I change it over with the new slim card. On top of that, the person didn’t speak all that good English.
I hope I have better luck with the phone then I did with changing it over!

  29. 37 Skip July 31, 2008 at 10:59 am

By the way, when I bought the phone they gave me a bonus code. 44424. Don’t know if it works yet, I’ll let you know if it works in 2 weeks!

  30. 38 pbushx2 July 31, 2008 at 11:36 am

    Hi Skip
I believe that bonus code is the code that TracFone automatically applies to phone orders that qualify for free shipping. I don’t think it’s good for any bonus minutes. You can check out my complete list of bonus codes here:
    http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/02/28/free-tracfone-minutes-with-bonus-codes/

  31. 39 Gayle August 2, 2008 at 7:59 am

They should write the user manual like people don’t know very much.Like me.I don’t know how to use the call waiting feature.
My caller ID worked for a few days then quit.I e-mailed Tracfone Tech and they gave me a long explanation that not all Tracfones come with Caller ID. Even after I told them it worked for a few days.
So I turned the phone off and on & now it is working properly. They could have saved a few hundred words of explanation.
Would someone tell me how to use the call waiting.I am going to ask my grandson but I wont see him for a while. I would email tracfone but who knows what they would tell me.

  32. 40 Tom August 2, 2008 at 11:06 am

How do you turn the speaker phone on? The instructions aren’t spelled out.

    • 41 ironjaw April 27, 2009 at 8:06 am

      Tom,
After you make or receive a call, look at the screen and you will see “speaker on”. Press the button under that message and your speakerphone will activate.

  33. 42 kjhales August 3, 2008 at 12:09 am

Like ortizmro above, I also have very poor battery life with the W376. After charging overnight (8 or 9 hrs), battery is dead in less than 48 hours on standby (no calls, no photos, no texting). Once the battery indicator drops from 3 bars (full) to 2 bars, there is only a couple hours before it’s dead; in fact it won’t even complete a call with two battery bars showing.

    Anyone else seen this?

  34. 43 Gayle August 3, 2008 at 7:44 am

Never mind my 14 yr old granddaughter told me what to do.

  35. 44 Icefire August 3, 2008 at 7:06 pm

All this talk about Tracfone deactivating USB ports, etc. is a little inaccurate. The w370 and W376g phones are made FOR Motorola by Compal,LLC, another company that contracts out to Moto for some of their lower level phones. These 2 phones are not real Motorolas. They never activated the USB ports to do anything but charge in the first place. Remember,Tracfone is owned by America Movil, South Americas’ biggest wireless company, and most of the CS reps are in South America. They are reading from scripts, or just resetting your phone most of the time when you call. Again, you get what you pay for, and Tracfone does offer decent little phones for the prices offered. I have had them for years, and currently have a W370 and a W376g. Other than having to buy my ringtones from the Tracfone site, and the limited Web browser, I like them as decent occasional use phones. Another forum, Howard Forums, has a whole section for folks to discuss Tracfones also, look it up on Google.

  36. 46 brx07 August 5, 2008 at 5:10 am

I like the w376g phone. A bit disappointed that Bluetooth really isn’t usable unless you’re only looking at matching it up with a Bluetooth headset, and that you can’t charge it via USB from your computer (without using the alternate driver that I haven’t tested yet). I was planning on even buying the 1-year airtime card with 400 minutes, doubled to 800 with this phone, and 200 bonus minutes for a total of 1000 minutes and 1 year service term. That’s on hold now because battery lifetime is only 1 day.

That’s right, just 1 day on a full charge and that’s without making or receiving any calls! I fully recharge the W376g during Sunday night and unplugged it fully charged around 9AM on Monday. It was left on but in standby mode (and without a screensaver running so the screen goes black). I let it sit turned on w/blank screen and flipped closed. No calls were made or received yesterday or last night. I happened to be up early and at 3AM on Tuesday and it was already beeping to tell me the battery was low. By 5AM, the cell phone battery was dead (couldn’t get the phone to power on). So after just 20 hours, the battery was dead. Not just low but dead.

I’ll be taking it back to Circuit City. They don’t carry any other Double Minutes For Lifetime cell phones for Tracfone other than this one so I’ll return mine as defective and get another one and start monitoring it for battery life. The Nokia 1112 that I had (and still have) would last a week in standby mode (and no calls made or received). This W376g’s battery should last longer than just a day (and not even a full day).

One minor defect with this cell phone is the delay after hitting a button before the display gets updated. Hit a button, wait a second, then the number shows up in the display. This makes checking the number that you tapped on the pad is correct. On the Nokia, the numbers showed up immediately in the display when I tapped a key.

I just set up my Tracfone Motorola W376g and am generally pleased, except for not being able to connect the phone by USB to my computer.

I downloaded and installed Motorola Phone Tools, and even the USB driver suggested by Rich on 7/18, but when I plug in my phone, the Motorola Phone Tools fails to recognize the phone.

I updated the files needed for the latest Motorola Phone Tools.

    Any suggestions?

  38. 48 ortizmro August 5, 2008 at 8:30 pm

I am beginning to think that battery charge life on this w376g is an issue. Mine goes for more than a day, but I thought it would be better than my motorola v60i which used to go for 4 or 5 days before I’d have to charge the battery. That battery finally started needing a charge every day, and along with the antenna breaking, is the only reason I replaced it with this new phone (w376g). But I have to charge the w376g every 2-3 days. That sucks. And it will only get worse as the phone gets older…

As for the USB connection, the description of the phone at Tracfone’s web site specifically states (for the w376g) that “This phone does not support PC connectivity via Bluetooth® or USB.”

    • 49 Anthony Marsh July 13, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Regarding battery life, mine seems to be getting better each week.
I tested it a couple of weeks ago and got a full charge in 2-1/2 hours. But I try to really drain it down to empty first. An easy way to know when it is about the die is you see the battery icon on the outside cover flash for a while when it is very low and then when it is about to die in 5 minutes you’ll hear the beep every other second. Then I turn on the radio and put the speaker on. So when the music stops the battery is completely drained.
Fully charged I get about 5 workdays on standby.

  39. 50 Pen August 6, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I have another question about this phone, ive bought it now and i am wondering how the radio works, in the manual https://www.tracfone.com/images/en/phones/TFMTW376/manual.pdf
it talks about using a 3.5mm headphone but ive tried and it seems to need a 2.5mm, is this true and where do i get a 2.5 to 3.5mm converter?
    thanks

There is a misprint in the User Mauual PDF about the Headset/FM radio jack. The W376g does have a 2.5mm and NOT a 3.5mm as shown. Radio Shack sells an 1/8 to 3/32 adapter that works if needed. The good news is that all standard wired headsets with a 3 conductor plug should work, I had two on hand and both worked ok. Just signed up for the email updates, thanks for the fine articles!

  41. 54 ortizmro August 7, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Radio Shack sells a 2.5 to 3.5 mm converter, but it costs $10.99! I bought it just to try my headphones in the phone, but I will probably take it back. It does work, and the radio in the phone works great! And using the radio does not deduct units for those that may be wondering…

Someone was asking about connecting GPS via bluetooth to phone. I got mine connected to my Garmin c550. The first time I could not get it to work properly so I deleted and did a new search. This time when I tested it worked. Garmin support was a bigger help then Tracfone support as far as what to do.
I see a lot of people saying the code is 0000. My phone was 1234.
I hope this can help somebody.

In a pbush14 blog that is a variation of this blog I posted that the Motorola w376g had a ‘hard-coded’ passkey of ‘0000′; I should have said that it has a default passkey of ‘0000′. The w376g will pair with other devices with passkey entry on both devices other than ‘0000′, i.e. attaching to a computer. I have successfully linked the w376g to a MS Windows XP system using a Kensington bluetooth adapter; however, since Tracfone cripples functions such as USB and bluetooth data connectivity it offered no benefit. Specifically, the Motorola w376g offered in the mainstream (non Tracfone) provides for attaching the w376g to a computer through USB or bluetooth ports where the cellphone appears as a mass storage device. Attached as a mass storage device you can use the cellphone’s directory structure as you would a disk drive transferring pictures, sounds, phone entries, etc. back and forth. This functionality, and the capability to recharge your w376g from the USB port, is offered by Motorola for the w376g with drivers available at:

    http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/nss/driversNplugins.asp

The drivers do not seem to work with the Tracfone w376g possibly because computer data transfer doesn’t require the use of minutes to transfer files and Tracfone’s success is primarily based on the use of minutes. Third party software products, including Motorola’s Tools (Moto tools), probably won’t be able to work with Tracfone’s w376g because the w376g won’t present itself as a data source; unless, of course, Tracfone updates the phone’s software to allow for it. According to Motorola they have no plans for including the w376g in the Moto tools software, regardless of the carrier. That is true of other systems as well.

Pairing the w376g with car bluetooth systems generally seems to require the default passkey of ‘0000′, but not in all cases. It would seem that some car systems provide the necessary ‘handshake’ allowing for mutually agreed upon passkey entry — go figure. Yww finally got his w376g to link with the use of passkey ‘0000′. Good for him.

Another forum offering info on the w376g is:

    http://forums.cnet.com/5208-4_102-0.html?forumID=74&threadID=300279&start=0

Tracfone is not very forthcoming with information on what features work and do not work on the cellphones they offer, typically referring only to the manufacturer/model and giving specifications that may mislead. The w376g is a cellphone with great features, providing they are not crippled for marketing purposes. The cellphone does link with car systems and is a great ‘hands free’ phone with good reception (depending on where you are) and as such is a good buy for most of us. If you don’t like feeling like you were given less than adequate marketing information or you take a lot of pictures and like a wide variety of music with your cellphone, then Tracfone probably isn’t for you.

I too am looking for accessories for my W376G. As for a car charger, the car charger for my husband’s Bluetooth speaker (Motorola “Portable Bluetooth Hands-Free Speaker”, model T305) fits my phone.

I haven’t tried to sync my phone to this speaker yet — I was just happy that the charger works on my phone.

I want to try the FM radio, but I don’t have any headphones that fit my phone. I just bought some headphones from Ebay (that were advertised for the W370) and I’m hoping those would work. If not, I’m only out $9. I’ll post my results once I receive the headphones.

I’ve tried emailing a picture to my yahoo email, but I only receive an empty email — no text and no picture. But my husband’s work email can successfully receive my emails (both text and pictures). So my empty emails don’t appear to be a tracfone problem. If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate hearing it.

I just bought a Voice Star VS275 earpiece from Radio Shack for $6.99. I assume the FM radio is MONO only anyway, so don’t see the need for headphones. Has the microphone on the cord and answer button.
Quality is adequate for MONO and cord is long enough to act as a good antenna. Anyone know how many OHMs the FM Radio outputs and what OHMs the VS is rated at? Matching OHMs may produce better quality sound.

Same problem as Aaron. My caller ID worked perfect for a month showing the name & number for incoming calls. Now only the number is showing. Very pissed off. Must be a bug.

  46. 60 James August 12, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I just received my W376g and I am very pleased with it so far. I tried connecting it through a usb cable to my PC running XP and it failed to recognize or charge my phone. I then connect the phone to my Eee pc, which is running Linux Xandros, and it was able to charge my phone.

Here’s a question I got from a reader, and I wonder if anyone else can help her out with this?

I was able to make a partnership between my Palm TX and the w376g. Would it be possible to download mypictures to the PDA and then sync them via my cable to the computer?

  48. 62 ortizmro August 15, 2008 at 6:34 am

Anybody having problems w/ the Caller ID not working properly – the suggested fix is to simply turn the phone off for a few minutes and then back on. If that doesn’t clear it up, then turn it off, remove/re-insert the battery, then turn it back on. Hopefully that does it!

    • 63 Terry November 14, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Thanks!! I don’t understand why, but this works! I bought a w376g in September 2009. Caller ID worked for about a month. Then the names quit displaying, the special ring tones didn’t happen, but the phone numbers appeared. Removing and reinserting the battery solved the problem.

  49. 64 humanone August 15, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I just ordered my phone, looked at the PDF manual many of you suggested, but can find no real information on The Web. Can I find weather, road, even wikipedia from my Motorola? Do I need and can I buy an additional web fee program? How and where? Thanks.

  50. 65 BenB August 16, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I have successfully enabled the USB port on the w376g to charge the phone via a cable from my notebook computer. A must when I’m travelling. I don’t much care that I can’t transfer content via USB. It would be nice to have but my main concern was being able to charge it. I did a Google search for drivers for the w375 USB driver and found one to download that worked just fine. Apparently, the phone is more like the w377 than the w375 according to those who ‘dabble’ in these sorts of things.

The main reason I got the phone was the requirement here in California for the use of hands free devices while driving. The phone paired up immediately with my JawboneII headset without any problems at all. I’m considering buying a visor speaker from Costco and I’ll test it to see if I can get it to work with the phone.

As far as transferring my existing phone numbers, I ordered a SIM card reader and software from http://www.dekart.com and it was fairly easy for me to transfer the phonebook from my v170 Tracfone to the new SIM card. The secret to getting the SIM card reader to work correctly was to make sure to install it in Windows SAFE MODE.
I also got one for my wife and did the same.

As for the Tracfone web site, I tried to transfer my existing minutes and ran into a snag. Had to call customer service to get things straightened out. Warning! Do NOT try to ‘guess’ the code numbers to enter when following the instructions on the website. It will disable the service to your phone.

Transferring my wife’s phone, I chose the option to keep the same number and I was able to successfully get through the process, but after 2 days when the email message was supposed to appear with the instructions on how to complete the process, it never did. I had to call customer service again. The transfer went without any issues and my wife was able to keep her number.

The battery life on the phone is a bit short, PARTICULARLY IF YOU HAVE BLUETOOTH ENABLED!… If you don’t need Bluetooth, don’t turn it on. If you DO use Bluetooth, turn it off when you’re not using it. All in all, I’m fairly satisfied with the phone.

I’ll continue to do research to see if there are any ways to make changes on the phone.

  51. 66 LynG August 16, 2008 at 5:56 pm

I bought this phone 2 weeks ago before a trip after reading the reviews here. I am hvaing trouble setting up the voicemail. The guide book that came with it says press “1″… and then there will be instructions from there via the phone. All I get with dialing in the “1″ to do this is a message to “leave a message”, like an anwering machine does. Each time it takes away at least a minute. I’m still on my initial 20 mintes with purchase but down to 12 minutes trying to get this voicemail to do its set-up thingee. I didn’t want to buy extra time/minutes until I know the phone will do what I want it to do,, one of which is take messages (other is for the bluetooth capability..haven’t gone there yet). Any suggestions, please? I’m getting frustrated about the phone…. HELP, anyone?!

  52. 67 Icefire August 21, 2008 at 3:26 pm

For the voice mail setup, the very first time you try it, you have to call your own cell phone number first, before pressing anything. Then follow the prompts to get leave and setup your message. then, after that, when you hold and press in 1, on your cell phone, it will dial your cell number, and let you access Voice mail. The guide forgets to tell you this critical step.

  53. 68 Dave August 21, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Sorry, I’ve been in a hole most of my life regarding texting and have recently come to enjoy it. I have a W175g and I can’t text to an email address. Can I send texts and photos to an email address (not just another phone number) with this. Thanks, sorry for the silly question, just couldn’t see it in the manual.

    Great review too, thanks!

  54. 69 pbushx2 August 21, 2008 at 10:41 pm

@Dave yes, this phone is capable of sending messages to email addresses. Also, you may be able to do so with the w175 as well, although I haven’t tried it myself. With my old Nokia 1100, what I have to do is, in the body of the message, begin with the email address that I want to send to. Then, type the remainder of the message. Finally, send the whole message to 36245. Notice that 36245 spells out “email” on the keypad. So, if I were sending a short message to you, it would be as follows:

dave@daveswebsite.com Hi Dave, how are you?

Then I would send it to 36245, and you would get it in your email. If you try this, let us know if it works. My w175 that I used for the review is out on loan for a few more days, but once I get it back I’ll try it out too.

    • 70 Anthony Marsh June 18, 2009 at 7:13 pm

What I’d like to do is set up a filter in my Comcast mail box so that any e-mail from specific people are converted into text messages sent to my phone. Or can that be done from a program like Courier?

  55. 71 Dave August 22, 2008 at 9:41 am

Thanks so much! Don’t have my tracfone with me today, I’ll do it as soon as I get home.

  56. 72 Dave August 22, 2008 at 8:09 pm

I tried this workaround on my Motorola (ancient) V180 (which can text to an email) and it worked fine. I tried it on the W175 and it said message undeliverable and some long code of 1s and Os. Thanks though!

  57. 73 ortizmro August 23, 2008 at 9:28 am

Dave, who is your service provider? Look at your phone’s SIM card title – will be something like TF64SIMT5 or TF64SIMC4. If it ends in T5 it is T-mobile, so send an email to your phone using the format “your10digitnumber”@tmomail.net and your phone should get the message. Now see who the sender is – probably a number of some kind. Use this number to send to. When I had T-mobile as my provider I was getting a 4 digit number that always began with 37 or 38, and would use this to send to (it’s known as an Email gateway) and it worked fine.

If the SIM title ends in C4 you are on an AT&T network. I can now just enter the email address in the To:, but I noticed that in my message setup I have in my Email Gateway field an entry of “121″ (it was blank before when I was on T-Mobile). So, if you are on an AT&T network, and using an email address doesn’t work in the To: for you, try using 121 in the To: and see if that works. It just might…

  58. 74 JS August 24, 2008 at 7:19 am

Wha? They disabled the USB port? Why?

    That’s a deal-breaker for me.

  59. 75 pbushx2 August 24, 2008 at 5:12 pm

It may be that the USB port never was that functional – perhaps the manufacturer never invested in the components to make it highly functional. Or, maybe TracFone disabled it to force users to use more airtime when transferring pictures and ringtones to or from a computer.

FYI, the LG 600G has a highly functional bluetooth feature that I’ve been able to use extensively for transferring files.

  60. 76 al August 24, 2008 at 8:27 pm

hey there. i just purchased the w376g and i was wondering if anyone knows how to send sms and mms from an email address to the phone. thax

  61. 77 ortizmro August 25, 2008 at 6:19 am

al, if you have AT&T as the provider for your Tracfone (hopefully that is the case), then you send a text msg (SMS) to your phone using the following: your10digitnumber@txt.att.net, and MMS by using: your10digitnumber@mms.att.net. If you have T-Mobile as your provider, don’t be surprised if you have problems with data services – but the correct email address for T-Mobile is: your10digitnumber@tmomail.net. The easiest way to tell what provider you have for your Tracfone is to read my previous post on the subject (which is just a few above this one!)

  62. 78 al August 25, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Hi, I feel like an idiot but I can’t figure out how to turn on the speakerphone on the w376g. The manual says to simply press “SPKR ON” but I don’t see such a button anywhere on the phone or in the menu system. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  67. 83 pbushx2 August 27, 2008 at 7:22 am

    Hi GM
I don’t have the phone in front of me to try it at the moment, but I’m pretty sure it’s an option that shows up once you have started a call. I think it’s the right “soft key,” but I could be wrong on that. Anyway, I’m pretty sure that you cannot turn it on until you have a call active.

  68. 84 Aaron August 27, 2008 at 9:53 am

@ Al I had the same problem and turnng it off for a few minutes or removing the battery did the trick for a few hours, THEN I started turning the phone off at night before going to bed and when it turn it on in the moring it works. I hae done this for almost 2 weeks and it has only quit working one time in this whole time, Maybe try that and see if it helps

  69. 85 GM August 27, 2008 at 10:55 am

Thanks for the reply pbushx2. I called the phone from my land line and when the call comes in the soft keys are “Answer” on the left and “Ignore” on the right.

This really is puzzling. Has anyone got the speakerphone working on their w376g? Thanks!

  70. 86 pbushx2 August 27, 2008 at 2:26 pm

once you “answer,” then one of the options is speaker phone. The call must be *connected* for the speaker phone option to be available.

pbushx2, thanks! That worked. Now I can drive legally in California :)

  72. 88 Bill August 29, 2008 at 5:33 pm

I’ve had the w376g for about two days now and I find it to be agood phone so far.
For the price I paid (39 dollars at Circuitcity), it feels like a solid phone, fitting nicely in the hand.
As a blind person I found the keys to be quite accessible and easy to use.
One thing I did find is that when pressing the power key, it seemed that I have to hold it down for a bit longer then I did with previous phones I’ve had.
So far I like the phone, and the service has been reliable. We’ll see what happens in the next few months.

  73. 89 Marn August 30, 2008 at 1:58 pm

BenB mentioned downloading new drivers so he could charge his phone from his laptop, does anyone have a link for that site.

  74. 90 DickT August 30, 2008 at 2:29 pm

I just got a w376g as my second TracFone — and second cell phone for that matter.I had the problem that others had in transferring my phone number and minutes from my old Nokia — it didn’t happen right away as implied on the web site so I had a couple of conversations with tech support and after about a day and a half it did. Then I tried setting up voice mail per the TracFone instructions and of course that didn’t work either — another call to tech support to get that straightened out.

After looking at the TracFone “manual” and seeing what a joke it was, I found the Motorola manual on-line and it leaves a lot to be desired too. For example, when I was having trouble with the voice mail set-up, I looked in the index and voice mailisn’t mentioned at all! When I found how to set the phone to answer a call by opening it, no where does it bother to tell you that closing it ends the call. Maybe it should be obvious but it would have been nice of them to confirm it.

On my non-flip Nokia, when the phone was turned on and in standby, I could glance at the screen to confirm that it was indeed on — it showed the time of day. I’m surprised there isn’t anything on the Motorola to indicate that it is on and in stand-by mode — you have to flip the lid open and have the screen light up to confirm. It seems like a lot of other flip cell phones that I have seen people use have some kind of an indicator light to let you know it is on. It would be nice if the Motorola lit up the batter light on the face plate as a way to tell you that it is on and keep you abreast of the battery status at the same time.

The phone certainly seems better than the Nokia but the phone, TracFone and Motorola don’t seem to be very user-friendly. No wonder people are switching to the iPhone (more expensive than I’m willing to pay) but it shouldn’t cost any (or much anyway) more to make a product and a service that is more user-friendly.

I just got my W376g and reading through some of the mails here, I tried to send a picture from my e-mail address to my tracfone using both (ten digit phone number)@mms.att.net and @tmomail.net but both mails returned a message as not delivered because there is no such address. Does anyone knows the e-mail address of possible tracfone carriers other the ATT and T-Mobile? I live in the Los Angeles area.

  77. 93 simplelife8888 August 31, 2008 at 12:25 am

I would like to add that the picture I was trying to send is Type: JPEG image, Dimensions: 273×358 and Size 72.2kb. Thus it is a small file and so the picture would not be the problem.

  78. 94 Bill September 3, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I do have a couple of questions I hope someone can help with. Can you tell me what the second button down from the top on the left hand side is used for? It’s the one right below the browser button I believe and just above the send button.
My wife says it’s called wave but the manual does not mention anything like that. When she pressed it, it deducted 50 cents.I’ve tried to read the manual but it is less then user friendly.

  79. 95 ortizmro September 4, 2008 at 8:52 pm

simplelife8888 – you need to determine what service you have. Look at my August 23 post above for determining what service you have. If you have T-Mobile, then that may be your problem. I had T-Mobile, and data services simply did not work. You will need to call Tracfone and request an AT&T SIM card – that’s what they did for me, and that should work much better. Try that first (if you are on T-Mobile).

  80. 96 ortizmro September 4, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Bill – on the w376g there is no other button between the Send and the Browser button. There is the raised separator between the Send and Browser buttons, and if you press that, perhaps that is selecting the Browser function, which deducts the .5 units.

  81. 97 Bill September 6, 2008 at 10:53 am

Ortizmro, what I feel on the top left hand side are three buttons. There’s one on the top left and then the button that apparently says “wave” and then the send button.
This is all when at the home screen. I’m just curious that’s all.

  82. 98 ortizmro September 6, 2008 at 11:35 am

    Bill – OK I understand.

There are three buttons on the left side of the phone, just above the 1 key. Starting from the bottom, there is the “Send” button, then the “Browser” button, and then the left “Soft key.” The button you say says “wave” is in fact your Browser button. It instantly starts your browser, and hence deducts .5 units before you even know what’s going on.

But Tracfone made things kind of redundant – they pre-programmed the left Soft key to go to the “Web Access” main menu, from which you can select the web browser. I had forgotten about this, because I changed my left Soft key to perform a different function.

So, that middle button, the “wave” button, is identical to selecting the top (left Soft key) button, and then selecting “Start Browser.” The “wave” button is like a shortcut key to the web browser. A lot of people don’t like it because it’s too easy to accidentally hit that key and get deducted .5 units when you didn’t mean to do it. And there doesn’t appear to be a way to disable the button as far as I know.

But that’s what the button is.

  83. 99 Bill September 7, 2008 at 5:21 am

Ortizmro, thanks a bunch for the help. You’ve basically confirmed my suspicions.
Maybe what I’ll do is reprogram the top soft key to go right to styles so I can change the ring tones allot quicker.
    Thanks again.

  86. 102 Brian September 15, 2008 at 11:39 am

Hey, I need to get another phone. I currently have a W370 and would get another one, even a reconditioned one to save $$$. If the W376g uses the same battery then I would definately get the upgrade. It is nice to be able to instantly charge my wife’s phone if her’s is dead and mine is full. I would like the next one to be compatible. The W370 uses a 3.7V lithium ion battery BQ50. Can someone take a peek and tell me what the W376g uses?

    Thanks,
    Brian

    • 103 Anthony Marsh June 18, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Yes, the 376G uses the BQ50 battery. Same as my old 175G. The same charger for the 175G also works on the 376G. But the 376G eats up the battery life a lot faster than the old 175G Candybar which might last 10-11 days whereas people have trouble getting even 2-3 days with the 376G. So, I carry two extras charged up.

  87. 104 Gungistoker September 15, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Human, only if you purchase an ‘unlocked’ w376g can you purchase a SIM card and use another service provider, Tracfones are ‘locked’. This is also why you can only send pictures via mms to an email address, the USB port is locked by Tracfone.

    Hi Brian
The w376 uses the same battery as the w370. Actually, all four of the most recent Motorola TracFone handsets (w175, w260, w370, w376g) use the same battery and the same charger. I discussed this somewhat in another post, here:
    http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/08/08/w376g-battery-suggestions/
Also, the w370 is on sale at TracFone’s website, reconditioned, for $30 and includes DMFL.

I’ve also seen some generic Motorola chargers very cheap, maybe Staples or Dollar Store, but think they are for Razor so not sure if they would work on the 376G. I also bought one of those Energizer chargers, but haven’t tried it yet. You can either plug it into the wall, or the car, or runs off the rechargeable AA batteries in the charger.

The w376g goes on sale quite often. Although I don’t think it’s on sale this week – on any given week, you should check (Sears, K-Mart, Circuit City) to see if they have put it on sale again for $39.99. Not a bad deal for that price.

    Hi,

I bought a new Tracfone W376g, and whenever some of my friends calls me it reduses the talk time. Is it correct.

Are they charging for incomming calls?

    Please help me

    Thanks In Advance

  91. 110 pbushx2 September 16, 2008 at 9:48 pm

    Hi Human
Yes, this is correct. TracFone, as well as most US cell companies, charge for both incoming and outgoing calls.

    • 111 Smaug May 27, 2009 at 9:12 pm

In The Beginning (of cell phone technology) the FCC ruled that both parties were to pay for air time (thus subsidizing the carriers) so as to help the cell phone industry survive. They (the FCC) promised to change to a caller pays system when the cell phone industry was able to survive on it’s own, without subsidy. At that time all calls where charged by-the-minute but before the FCC could change their ruling the main-stream cell phone carriers switched from charging by the minute to monthly plans and the FCC forgot about its promise and has no shown intention of keeping its word to switch to a caller pays system. The only people that even notice this are those of us that pre-pay, most plan subscribers* who don’t make a lot of calls don’t even know they’re over paying.

*Those who don’t make many calls are subsidizing those who make a lot of calls.

While I don’t yet have a Motorola w376g, I do have a Motorola w370 TracFone. I have a handful of generic USB-to-MiniUSB cables and none of them will charge the w370. However, both my Garmin and Canon USB-to-MiniUSB cables WILL charge the w370. I am using a Mac iBook with no special drivers. I haven’t tried it with my Compaq laptop. Hope this helps.

Rofl I would switch i currently have a v170 which had to be replaced with another v170 and that was a nightmare. In the end they lost my phone number after 3 weeks of about 10 sim cards. Had to call corporate to get 500 free minutes for that fiasco. I prefer the v170 for the free incoming text. That right there is worth to keep. I want to upgrade to new phone but I love the free incoming text.

  96. 116 pbushx2 September 20, 2008 at 2:49 pm

    Eric –
I’m the same way – I still have my Nokia 1100 as my personal phone, even though I could switch to the LG 600G that I reviewed at any time. Even though I’ve already paid for the LG, I still am on the fence about switching because I use the free incoming text so much. And, the flashlight feature of the 1100 is pretty helpful as well.

Try this site to enable charging phone from your pc’s usb.
    http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/
I use the windows usb driver to charge my W370 from tracfone.

You didn’t mention that the spearker phone funtion is not very good. Needs to be louder.

To turn the speaker phone funtion on you press the top right hand side soft key after the call is connected.

Here is a text copy of the driver for charging from USB port. It will not work for data transfer. I believe if you copy this to notepad and save it as “AnyFileName”.bat then plug the phone into a computer and when the device found installer asks direct it to the bat file you just created as the driver it will start charging your phone.

If this doesn’t work, or anyone else has any ideas on how to simplify it please comment.

I have no idea what this file was originally meant for but it worked for me.

Perhaps someone more into programming could edit it to take any unneeded tidbits out.

Success on sending photos to my computer! (The quality is lousy, as expected)
First I put an email adress in the phonebook, like Joeblow@yahoo.com.
I took a photo and stored it, as per manual.
(I hope I’ve remembered all these steps, but it is as described in the manual, except you have to figure out things. There is not exactly an “insert” button that the manual calls for)
From the menu, select messages, go to “create” and click ok.
    Click ok on MMS
Write the text of the message and click ok.
Select the email address and click ok.
Press menu and scroll down to attachments, click ok.
    Select “change” and click ok.
    Select “picture” and click ok.
You should have stored the picture in “additional storage device”. Select that and click ok.
After you get the photo selected with the softkey , press “back” button.
If the photo file is shown as the attachment, press the “send” button.
Again, I hope I remembered this right. It was a relief to get this figured out, and now I can give this phone to my wife and forget about it!

  103. 123 pbushx2 October 13, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Gene – Thanks for taking the time to share that. It is a oft-requested piece of info, and your work in writing it all out will save frustration for many other users (even if it IS in the manual, LOL)!

All TF’s are locked. No you cannot use the SIM from any other phone, not even another TF SIM. I know this isn’t how SIM’s are *supposed* to work, but this is another thing TF crippled. The phone s/n and the SIM s/n are linked. An unlocked W376 will not work as a TF.

You will not find this info anywhere on TF’s Web site. You find out when you buy a new phone and try to use the old SIM in the new phone, get “Unregistered SIM” on the new phone screen, and then call Tech Support, who will then tell you the good news. You will have to manually re-key your contacts in…all 500 of them.

Also, if you deactivate a phone you have to get a new SIM from TF if you want to put it back in service because they electronically deactivate the SIM when they deactivate the phone. If you get a new phone and want to give your “old” one to your wife you have to call TF and they will send you a new SIM in the mail. They cannot electronically reactivate the SIM that’s in the phone because “that’s the way the system is set up.”

Yes, they charge for incoming calls at the same 1 unit per minute rate as outgoing calls. And yes that means “toll free” numbers, too. You aren’t paying for the call, you are paying for the airtime. This is pretty much how all US cell carriers work. Some carriers have special programs where some calls are free, but not TF, AFAIK. I don’t know about 911 calls.

If someone calls you from overseas, I believe you are only charged the normal usage rate since you are in the US, but you should check w/TF on that.

    I hope this helps.

I purchased a W376g yesterday from WallyWorld for $29.97. That is also the on-line price. Don’t bother to use the “Find in Store” link because it is useless. It said they had none within 100 miles of me, but 3 within driving distance had several. Two of the 3 stores were selling it for $39.95 and said the Web price was lower “to get people to use the Web site.” The third store had it foe the lower price, so I got it there.

I’ve noticed big price drops for this and the LG600 ($29.97 & $49.97 respectively at WM) vs $49.99 for each from TF (and didn’t the LG start out at $79.99?) Does that mean that these are about to be upstaged…after only 4 months?

And as I was writing this I went to WM’s Web site to verify the prices, I noticed the W376 that was listed yesterday is no longer there.

  106. 126 juror58 October 18, 2008 at 8:12 am

    Camera question:

Can you take pictures with the lid closed with this phone like you can with the LG600g?

  107. 127 BruceM October 18, 2008 at 4:20 pm

The description of the W376g says it has 23 included ringtones. I feel really dumb to ask, but where are they? I’ve gone down every menu item and only find “Ring Styles” (loud, soft, vibrate, silent).

BTW – These reviews and comments have been very helpful. I also had no problem pairing the phone to our car using ‘0000′.

  108. 128 John October 21, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I bought a w376g after reading everything on your site. Awesome! Thank you thank you thank you! Anyway, I love it so far. The battery life is sort of medium compared to some of the comments, but I may call Tracfone and see if they’ll send me a new one – not a big deal for me. I think everything else is great. (Keep in mind I read everything here and knew the limitations.) I also emailed a midi ringtone to the phone, but it wouldn’t work from Thunderbird on a Mac. Yahoo mail worked just fine. I haven’t tried the Bluetooth yet. I think the speakerphone works just fine; callers tell me they can hardly tell the difference. I’m on AT&T and haven’t had any trouble sending pictures, even to Thunderbird.

One thing I haven’t figured out: what are some of the icons for? The upper right are battery and ringer, I get that. One the upper left are bars showing network connection strength (of course). To the left of the bars, right in the upper left corner, there’s something… I have no idea, can’t even describe it. To the right of the bars there are three stacked rectangles – looks sort of like documents, maybe. And on the bottom, in the center between the soft key labels, there are some horizontal bars stacked up. Anyone know what any of these are?

Thanks again for all the hard work, pbushx2!

    Thanks again

  111. 131 pbushx2 October 22, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Hi John. I’m not sure, but I’ll do my best here. I looked at the manual (http://www.tracfone.com/images/en/phones/TFMTW376/manual.pdf), and it looks like the three boxes mean that GPRS is available. The three stacked bars near the bottom indicates that you can click on the center of the circle to access the menus. I’m not sure what you are referring to left of the signal strength indicator. I’ve never seen anything farther left than the signal strength, and the manual was no help from what I could tell. Maybe you’ll be able to figure it out by looking at the manual again?

  112. 132 ortizmro October 23, 2008 at 6:16 am

John – to the left of the signal strength indicator bars is an icon of a cell tower. Those three horizontal bars between the soft key labels have significance when you are already within the menus on the phone. When they are present, then that means the main menu key (center circle key) has unique menu items if you select it. If those horizontal bars are not present, then pressing the main menu key is the same as selecting the left soft key.

  113. 133 ortizmro October 23, 2008 at 11:28 am

matt – think you have to call Tracfone on that one. Probably someone else used to have the number you now have – that actually happened to me a few Tracfones ago, and they ended up just assigning me a new number. Was no big deal since no one had yet gotten my phone number.

  114. 134 ortizmro October 23, 2008 at 11:40 am

John, and to further clarify, that “cell tower” is usually seen with vertical bars to the right indicating signal strength. If you see this cell tower by itself with no vertical bars at all to the right, you have no signal at all and probably cannot make/receive calls.

  115. 135 John October 26, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Thanks guys for clarifying the icons. I did a little research about GPRS so I have a slight clue what it is, but just what good does it for me?

  116. 136 Ricky October 28, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I like the phone except for haveing to send pictures to my e-mail.When I make a local call I have to dial the area code also.Is there any way to get around haveing to do this every time?

  117. 137 pbushx2 October 28, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Hi Ricky – I don’t think that there’s a way around this, other than possibly adding the number to a speed dial so that you don’t have to enter all ten digits every time you make a call.

  118. 138 Bru October 30, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Is there a way to set the Motorola W376g to shut off automatically at a specified time. This was possible with the V170 but I cannot find the setting in the W376.

  120. 140 ortizmro November 6, 2008 at 12:18 pm

raypro – I’ve not found a way of doing this, and there is not a procedure shown in the manual for having the w376g shut itself off at a set time. So I don’t think you can do it.

I am a little suspicious about this so-called “Additional Storage.” I see a slot on the left side side which is plugged up by rubber. I suspect they were going to put an SD card slot there but never got around to it.

  122. 143 Leeanne November 17, 2008 at 10:34 pm

I found this blog earlier this evening and have spent three hours reading the information you all provide. Your site has saved this 66 year old lady many hours of frustration.

I purchased the w376g last week and finally had it activated and my minutes/number transferred tonight. As per usual, I had to call tech support as TF’s web site wold not recognize my old Nokia 1100’s number. The experience wasn’t bad this time. :-)

I have a question regarding the browser/wave keys. It has been discussed that there is no way to turn off web access. How on earth do we stop the process without turning off the phone?

As I tried to manually enter my contacts, I would sometimes activate the wave function. As I saw no way to stop the connecting, I would simply shut the phone down. Surely there must be a better way?

My Hubby is pretty savvy when it comes to cell phone features, but I don’t want him using my phone minutes while trying to find a solution to the internet access dilemma.

    Thank you. :-)

  123. 144 pbushx2 November 17, 2008 at 10:48 pm

    Hi Leanne
I’m always very happy to hear that people are benefiting from my work. It’s why I do what I do :)
To answer your question, once the browser button is accidentally pushed, you can immediately press the red “end” key. The phone will then ask whether you really want to exit the browser, and you’ll need to press “OK,” which will be the upper-most left button on the keypad – also known as the “left soft key.”
    Hope this helps!

  124. 146 Hoku November 19, 2008 at 12:37 am

I purchased the Motorola HS120 Handsfree Headset for $1.69 along with the Motorola 3.5mm to 2.5mm Audio Adapter and Converter for $0.41 through CCMACCESSORIES via Amazon.com

With shipping the total was $8.92. Yes, the shipping cost more than both the headset and adapter combined but I’m not complaining. It’s a heck of a deal on the headset and adapter. They also have good prices on bluetooth headsets but I don’t really need or want one at the moment.

I wasn’t sure if either of these items would work with the Tracfone version of the Motorola W376g, since it wasn’t listed as compatible. However, I’m happy to say that both items function with the FM radio at least. With the 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter I’m able to listen to the FM radio with a pair of Sennheiser PX100 headphones and it sounds great for what it is. The HS120 in ear phones sound pretty good as well. I’m not sure if the answer/end button works with the W376g as I haven’t tried it yet.

Thanks for all the info on the W376g. There certainly isn’t much information available from Tracfone. What they send as a manual is a joke. At least with the W370 they sent an actual paper Motorola manual.

    Cheers!

I too am a long time 1100 user, but my current one just loss the ability to ring. All the setting are right and it will vibrate in that mode, but it won’t ring. Anyway, looking for new phone.

Voice quality and reception are most important, so it looks like you’d definite recommend the w376g over the lg600. Question 1–is this a pretty generally held feeling? I’m wondering if your particular phone might just be “off.” And 2nd question–I’m used to the 1100’s “find” feature to locate and call a number. Per the online manual for the w376g, you’ve got to scroll through the phonebook. This sounds like a royal pain. Can it really be that limited functionally? And do you know if the lg600 has the same shortcoming?

    Thanks much. Extremely informative blog!!

  126. 149 pbushx2 November 22, 2008 at 9:42 pm

    Hi Russ
It could be that one of my phones is a “lemon,” but from other reviews that I’ve seen I think that most people that have used both phones generally agree that the sound quality on the Moto is superior. Regarding your phone book question, I just checked (the Moto I reviewed is now my wife’s phone) and if you press the bottom button on the directional pad to bring up the contact list, you can then use the keypad to enter the name of the person you are looking for.
You can either enter as many letters of their name as you’d like. For example, if you were looking for “Nicholas” you could just enter “N” and then scroll the rest of the way, or you could enter “Nich” to get it narrowed down even further.
Also, the LG 600g functions similarly.
    Hope this helps!

Most interested in phone qualities, so followed your advice and went with Moto W376g over LG 600. No regrets at all re sound quality; you sure nailed it there.

One question re camera ops–having taken a picture and saved it, is there any way to get rid of it?? I see no delete option anywhere once it has been saved, but can’t believe this can’t be done.

    What am I missing??

  129. 152 Russ November 29, 2008 at 6:46 pm

Sorry, but another question. This is related to your answer to my 11/22 question re finding a listing by name without scrolling through the whole list on the Moto w376g.

Pressing the bottom of the directional pad allows me to enter a single letter and then jumps me to the first listing beginning with that letter. If I enter a second letter, as the second letter of the name, the phone treats it as another first letter and jumps me to the start of the listings with that letter.

I’ll tell you, this phone does have great sound quality and volume, but functionally, it’s totally illiterate!! I’d rate it a D- overall.

  130. 153 Gungistoker November 30, 2008 at 9:05 am

I’ve been sending all my pictures within the message instead of as an attachment, mainly because it’s so much easier and clear. Well, I decided to test whether there was any cost difference. There sure is. And by the way, they both arrived identically, within an attachment.
A 43.2 kb picture sent as an attachment cost 1.5 minutes.
A 43.2 kb picture sent within the message cost 2 minutes.
If you send a lot of pictures, you better figure out how to send an attachment.

Re: Using the contact list (or phonebook) in the w376g. From the home screen, the default setting for the “home keys” is for the bottom home key (the bottom navigation key) to select the phone book. So if you haven’t changed your home keys settings, then you should be able to select the bottom navigation key and this takes you to right to your phone book.

Then once in the phone book, you should, indeed, be able to select entries quickly by typing in letters. If you type in just one letter, then you will go to entries beginning with that letter. If you type in multiple letters (not too slowly!) then you can spell out the first few letters of a last name – at least that’s the way it works in mine.

    Hi,
My son wants the W376G Tacfone, but we can not puchase it until we know hom many text messages the in box will hold. Can anyone help me. I tried to call tracfone but they did not know.
    Thanks

    • 156 pbushx2 December 7, 2008 at 10:10 pm

      Hi Blanche
I’m not sure on this, but I can tell you that my wife’s w376g currently has 63 saved messages, and she’s never had any problems with too little storage. Sorry I can’t give a more specific answer, but I know that it will hold at least that many.

  133. 157 Cameochi December 7, 2008 at 5:32 pm

First of all, I want to thank everyone for all the great information I found here. I purchased my Motorola W786g yesterday. I got really tired of spending almost $500 a year for something I don’t use that often. A TracFone is the perfect solution for me. I got the phone for $29.99 with unlimited double minutes. I purchased the annual card with 400 minutes and the phone came with ten minutes on it. When everything doubled, I ended up with 820 minutes which is double what I used in the last two years. For $137.78 including tax I am set until January 4, 2010 – and no more monthly bill.

My first cell phone was also a Motorola through Allel. It was the first one they made with a large, color display. I don’t remember the model number. It may have worked well in the city but here in the country, it would not hold a charge. It went dead after about six hours on standby. I complained and Motorola told me they were coming out with a heavy duty battery. I bought one (over $40.00)and it wasn’t any better than the first one.

When my contract was up, I switched from Alltel to Sprint and got a Nokia 6165i. It’s been a great phone and holds a charge on standby for days but it shared one major problem with the old Motorola. I could not make a phone call from inside my house with either one of them. This is a rural area and the signal just wasn’t strong enough. You haven’t lived until you’ve gone outside in a hurricane to make a phone call. :-)

Yesterday that changed. The Moto W786g works great! That, in and of itself, is a major improvement. I actually sat down in my house and talked to my son on my cell phone. I can live with recharging my phone every few days if needed. That’s a vacation compared to having it go dead in six hours or having to go outside every time I needed to make a call. The only thing that concerned me, and it was relatively minor, was how to get my logo onto the new TracFone since it does not connect to a computer like my Nokia did. Then I found this great blog!

Thank you, John, for providing the solution! I emailed the logo to my cell phone using the AT & T address you provided and it worked like a charm. I bought a car charger as I have been known to forget to charge my cell phone and I also got an ear bud today which works great and will allow me to be hands free while driving. Thanks again, everyone, for all of the great information. It is much appreciated.

  134. 158 ortizmro December 8, 2008 at 7:33 am

Blanche – the w376g has a max storage capacity 0f 500 messages on the phone (combined – in the Inbox and Outbox), and 30 messages on the SIM card.

  135. 159 Dave Yuhas December 9, 2008 at 12:21 am

    #ortizmro-

Thanks to you I figured out how to send email to my phone. But sending email from the phone doesn’t seem to work. As I understand you instructions, I should enter the 4-digit number that arrives with the email message in the To: field to send email from the phone. Is that correct? Shouldn’t there also be @somedomain.com?

  136. 160 ortizmro December 10, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Dave Yuhas – sending email from the phone can be a little tricky. If it doesn’t work to just reply to the email sent to the phone, then check your Message Setup: Go to Messages, then select the main menu (center circle) key, and select Message Setup, and look at the entry for Email Gateway. If your carrier is AT&T, then this entry should be either 121 or 111 (mine is 121). If your carrier is Tmobile, then what worked for me was to look at the set of numbers in the Sender in the email message sent to the phone – if I remember it was a 4 or 5 digit number beginning with a 3. Enter this number in the Email Gateway. If that doesn’t work, then try entering 500 as the Email Gateway (again this is for Tmobile).

Now you should be able to send to a phonebook entry that has an email address, and you should be able to reply to an email message sent to your phone. Let me know how it works for you.

I used to be on the Tmobile network, then got switched to AT&T, which works much better, IMHO.

  137. 161 Dave Yuhas December 11, 2008 at 5:11 pm

    Ortizmro -

Thanks for the help. I tried your suggestions, but can’t reply or send a new email from the phone. Not a big deal to me.

  138. 162 ortizmro December 12, 2008 at 6:59 am

Dave – what network (AT&T or Tmobile) and phone do you have? And when you send an email to your phone, what exactly do you see as the sender (as read in the message on the phone)?

  139. 163 Jaimes Beam December 12, 2008 at 7:08 am

It’s nuts to have to change the driver to have to charge the phone on a PC USB!

  140. 164 Joel December 13, 2008 at 12:47 am

    Hi,
I’ve read all of the posts on this site and maybe I skipped some, but I see that a lot of people are talking about being able to email mp3 files to the W376g, but no one describes the actual process. I am able to email jpeg pictures and midi files to mine, but mp3’s just say that the file format is not compatible with the phone.
I was having a problem with everything I sent from my mac osx email software which was putting some sort of quicktime encoding on the attachments causing them to be corrupt when they got to the phone, but I switched to my atmail webclient and the midi files and jpeg pictures come to the phone just fine. (just in case that helps anyone).
Does anyone know why my mp3’s aren’t working? I’m wasting a lot of minutes trying to figure it out… I can’t find any specs on how mp3 files should be created for this phone…
I have saved my mp3 files as 44.1khz 16bit mono files with 96kbps (i’ve tried a few other settings too) and from everything i’ve read, these settings should be ok, does anybody know why I can’t get the format to work. Does this phone require some weird file extension for mp3’s? Do I need to change one of my settings?

Also, for those having issues charging from a computer via the usb port, my Apple eMac seems to charge the phone just fine and I didn’t do anything special at all. I used a usb cable from my sony digital8 video camera and plugged it in and it charges. I don’t know if that helps anyone, but I thought that it would be good to mention if it helps just one, so there you go. Anyway, any help on the mp3 situation would be much appreciated. I have some killer old school arcade game ringtones that I made and would love to use on my phone…
    Thanks!

  141. 165 ortizmro December 16, 2008 at 6:49 am

Joel – I actually don’t know of anyone being able to email mp3s to the w376g and have them work. The only files that work thru emailing to the phone are midi files. You have to get mp3s thru Tracfone’s website, something that I have not yet done, nor care to do.

I have the w376g. I have a problem with getting the pictures that people sends to me. but I can get there text messages. Do I have to do somthing different. please help me

    @ortizmro
Regarding the caller-id issue, your suggestion worked. Thanks!

  144. 168 DKW December 16, 2008 at 5:57 pm

I upgraded my Tracfone to the w376g solely for the Blue Tooth feature, something NOW required for ALL drivers using cell phones in CALI. But I DO admit, the phone DOES look cool!!

Besides the annoying upfront browser button, which was adequately covered in your review, my only issue is with the Battery,it’s short life, and the LONG recharging time, seemingly almost as long as the so-called “initial charge”!!

The one thing that wasn’t mentioned in your review, was that this particular TracFone does NOT include an audible beep that indicates when the Battery charge has been completed, which was a handy feature if you’re in the same room where the phone has been charging, and you’d know to DC the Charger to avoid an overcharge.

And while I DO understand that with the extra cool features, that this particular phone will naturally require the use more battery power; But for ONLY using this phone for quick calls or emergencies every few days,as I do,this phone sure drinks up a LOT of juice, FAST!!

    • 169 pbushx2 December 16, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Thanks for taking the time to add your experience so that others considering purchasing this phone can make an informed decision. I really appreciate your input!

  145. 170 jerry December 19, 2008 at 12:43 pm

speaker phone, instructions in manual forgets?, to say.
after connecting, see “speakerphone” logo for top right soft key.
works. originating or answering, you must be connected.

    next the battery.
keep charging it and the full charge time will come to life.
run it up, then drain it, repeat. bingo.

or buy a spare battery that guarantees full charge at get go.

  146. 171 John December 19, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Can you program the W376G motorola so the date shows on the main screen each day?

  147. 172 jazzy December 20, 2008 at 1:04 am

thank u u have made me decide that i will buy this phone cause ive been in tracfone for three years now but how much does it cost to picture text??

    • 173 pbushx2 December 23, 2008 at 3:31 pm

It depends upon how big the picture file is, but in my experience it costs 1-2 units to send a picture message (also known as MMS).

  148. 174 lowdenguitar December 21, 2008 at 8:02 am

For anyone who is interested, I own a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country with Uconnect bluetooth capability. I just bought (2) w376g phones, and paired them with my car’s bluetooth. I’ve never set up bluetooth before, but didn’t run into any problems, and both phones were recognized right away by the Uconnect technology. I also didn’t have any pin # related problems as some have had with their phones/vehicles. Just thought I’d put that out there for anyone who has the same car and is wondering whether they should buy a w376g.

  151. 177 Tiffany December 27, 2008 at 10:44 am

Thanks so much for your review its really helpful. I just have a couple questions about this phone… is there an option to have your phone beep once? Also if you have your ringer off & the phone isnt on your person is there a way to see that a call is coming in without opening the phone? I know it has an indicator for a voice mail left but if the person doesnt leave a message I want to see that a call is coming in from the outside of the phone…dont need to know who is calling from the outside… just that a call is coming in while the phones ringer is off. Thanks.

PS looking forward to your review on the LG225!

    • 178 pbushx2 December 28, 2008 at 8:25 am

      Hi Tiffany
I don’t see how this phone can be set to beep just once – there is a “ding” ringtone option, but it seems to play repeatedly when a call is coming in. On the outside of the phone there is an indicator that lights up when there is a call coming in. If you don’t answer that call, the indicator will stay lit (flashing) until you clear the “missed calls” list.

  152. 179 Tiffany December 28, 2008 at 10:20 am

If there was a beep once it would be located not with the ring tones but in the part where you can turn your phone ringer off. My old phone offered… silent, ring once, beep once, ascending etc.

Thanks for all your help. =)

    • 180 pbushx2 December 30, 2008 at 10:02 pm

      Hi Tiffany
This phone unfortunately does not have that option. If I recall correctly, the options are: Loud Ring, Soft Ring, Silent, Vibrate only, Vibrate then ring, & Vibrate and ring (simultaneously).

  153. 181 Don December 28, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Any suggestions as to why I cannot pair my new w376g with my Toyota Prius? My Toyota salesman also tried his Verizon and it would not pair either. I just love how these guys just walk away when they can’t figure it out. Could there be a problem with my car’s system or software? From the lack of interest at my dealership, I suspect someting with the car, but will obviously need accurate info to get them to do anything, should that be the case. Or, did I buy the wrong bluethooth phone?

    • 182 pbushx2 December 30, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Here’s a previous comment, as posted by “JEM,” specifically relating to the 2008 Prius. Hope it helps!:

In the car’s bluetooth settings screen there should be an entry called ‘access code’ or ‘passkey’; change the code offered up by the car’s bluetooth with 0000 and register noting the ‘device name’. Ignor any instuction to enter code into phone as the w376g is hard-coded with 0000 and the w376g won’t permit change to the code.

On the w376g access the ’settings’ menu selecting ‘bluetooth link’. Select ‘find me’, then select ‘audio devices’ and the screen should provide a menu listing the ‘device name’ for the car’s bluetooth noted earlier. Highlight and select the device name and pairing should begin.

  154. 183 erica December 29, 2008 at 2:22 pm

i bought this phone over the weekend, and really enjoy it, but had a few questions dealing with bluetooth and realtones; can i use bluetooth from one phone to another to receive real music ringtones? has anyone else tried that? i have been able to send realtones to my phone from freeringers.net and can play them in the message and can even save them, but can’t be played and applied as ringtones once saved…any ideas?

    • 184 pbushx2 December 30, 2008 at 10:20 pm

      Hi Erica –
I don’t believe that anyone has successfully connected via bluetooth to another phone. One of the negatives of the w376g is that the bluetooth functionality is quite limited. Basically, it can be used only with headsets and some navigation systems, and only for audio transmission. Transferring data files via bluetooth, as far as I know, is not possible.
Also, I’m not sure what type of ringtones you’ve been able to play and save, but here’s a helpful website that discusses ringtones on the w370, which is very similar to the w376g:
      http://thejmart.com/w370rt.htm
Hope it helps – either way, it’d be great if you let us know how it goes for you. Good luck!

  155. 185 sp December 30, 2008 at 7:22 am

How do I download pictures from my 376g to my Mac? I purchased the 5-pin USB cable, but the phone doesn’t mount on my desktop like a flash drive. It does, however, charge my phone. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    ~sp

    • 186 pbushx2 December 30, 2008 at 10:25 pm

      Hi sp –
Unfortunately, the only way to get pictures off this phone as far as I know is to email them from your phone to your email address. This will cost a unit or two of your airtime to send as an MMS message.

  156. 187 Annie December 31, 2008 at 6:20 am

Can anyone direct me on how to find the “email gateway” in the phone’s menus? And please don’t say “in the message setup”…

  157. 188 ortizmro January 2, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Annie – if you have the w376g, do as follows: from the Home screen, select the Messages key (below the right soft key), then select the main menu key (center round key), then scroll down to Message Setup and hit the main menu key (center round key) again to Select it.

The Email Gateway is the last displayed item in the Message Setup screen. Scroll down to it, and hit the main menu key to Select it if you want to enter or change the entry there.

What a great service you’re providing! A couple weeks ago there was a question about receiving photos sent by others. The person posting the question can receive text messages but not photos. I don’t see a response yet. We gave our daughter a 376g for Christmas and she is having the same problem. She receives text messages fine, sends photos fine, but can’t receive photos. Do we need to set something up in the phone, buy a service, or is there maybe a compatibility issue going on? Thanks for any help.

  159. 190 Confused January 2, 2009 at 10:42 pm

I just got the Motorola W376 and, so far, very happy with it. I have a question that I can’t seem to solve Is there a way to change the number of rings before the calls goes to voicemail? It seems after 4 rings it goes to voice mail and I would like to make it at least 7 or 8 before it goes to voicemail. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  160. 191 Math Guy January 2, 2009 at 10:47 pm

    I like the phone too!

  161. 192 Math Guy January 2, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Does anyone know where I can get a car charger for the W376?

  162. 193 Math Guy January 2, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the number of rings on the W376 before the call goes to voicemail? It seems to go after 4 rings, and I want to have it go 7 or 8 rings before going over to voicemail.

  163. 194 Tiffany January 3, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I have ordered the phone along with the accessory kit that has the headset, car charger & case. Im anxious to get it.

Another question… can you assign different ring tones for different callers?

  164. 195 ortizmro January 5, 2009 at 8:09 am

To assign different ring tones to different callers – go to to the phone book, select the entry, then View, Edit, scroll to Sound, then select Change, then select “Preloaded and downloaded media files” and select the desired sound you want associated with this phone book entry.

  165. 196 ortizmro January 5, 2009 at 8:12 am

As far as I know, you cannot change the number of rings before the phone goes to voice mail. You might be able to call Tracfone Customer Service and see if they will do this.

  166. 197 Tiffany January 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Another question for those who have activated their phones over the computer. Were you able to transfer from another phone? I have minutes left on my phone & an air time due date that I dont want to lose so would like it transfered to my new phone. I usually did that over the phone but if you can do it online just as easy I might give it a try.
    Thanks.

  167. 198 Tiffany January 7, 2009 at 5:49 pm

I have my phone activated now & need help with text messaging… WHAT IS UP WITH THE TEXT Messaging? Example I have to his the button 3 times to get the letter C. I thought it had some sort of preditive text thing. Help.

    Thanks.

  168. 199 Pam January 7, 2009 at 7:30 pm

If you have an Att Yahoo account you can view you emails on your W376g phone. I have even played black jack online on this phone on Yahoo.
http://mobile.yahoo.com/mail Just make sure you keep track of your units.

    • 200 pbushx2 January 9, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Wow Pam, great tip! I’ll have to check that out myself. I thought that this was impossible with the w376g, but obviously I was mistaken.

Can you tell me: At what rate are units deducted? And when you say you’ve played blackjack, do you mean you can play yahoo games against other live people that are playing on their computers?

  169. 201 ortizmro January 8, 2009 at 7:09 am

Tiffany – re: text messaging, you need to change your default text entry mode. While in a blank message (SMS/EMS) window, select the main menu button (center round button), and scroll to select Entry Setup. Then select Primary setup, and the one you want is iTAP English. Choose whatever you want for your secondary setup (I have none selected for mine).

Now you will have the predictive text mode as your default text entry mode when you type text messages from now on. And FYI, after you type a word, use the asterisk key to quickly select the word and insert a space. Also, you can use the # key to toggle to alternate entry modes – for example, if you need to enter a string of numbers within your message, then change the entry mode by selecting the # key until you see a “12″ display to the upper left (to the left of “Message”) and then all the keys are numbers. Then toggle the # back to “ab 1″ to go back to predictive text.

  170. 202 Tiffany January 8, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Thanks so much for your help. =)

I got my first call today & it was really clear but a bit louder than I would like. Does anyone know if theres a way to turn that down?

  171. 203 ortizmro January 9, 2009 at 7:00 am

To adjust the volume of the w376g – during a call, use the volume keys that are on the left side of the phone. The volume keys are located on the left side of the phone (to the left of the web browser and Send keys). Has do be done during an actual phone conversation.

  172. 204 Tiffany January 9, 2009 at 2:22 pm

    Great thanks.

Does anyone know where to buy those silicone skins, faceplates or screen protectors for this phone?

  173. 205 jun January 12, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I just activated my w376g today and have been playing with text messaging, something my ancient old phone didn’t have. I have determined that I have T-mobile, because sending an e-mail to my phone at the tmomail.net extension works perfectly.

However, I haven’t been able to reply yet. I tried setting my Email gateway to the 4-digit # associated with the incoming message, but it didn’t work. Neither did setting it to 500. Either that, or they’re just really, really slow in processing.

In both cases, I was trying to reply to the e-mail message. I have no idea how to add an e-mail to the phonebook. Can someone help?

  174. 206 ortizmro January 13, 2009 at 7:45 am

jun – if you set your Email gateway to that number that you see as the “sender” in the email message (or 500, whichever one ends up working), then you need to be sending to an actual email address for this to work (to see the message show up in the Inbox of the email addressee).

To enter an email address in your phone’s address book, do as follows: go to your phone book. If you want to add an email address to an entry that is already in your phone book, then highlight the entry, select View, then Edit. Scroll to “More…” and select it and choose Email, then Change. Then enter the email address. Be advised that this will create a new entry in your address book.

You can also create a new entry from scratch and make it an email address. Phone Book, then main menu key (center round button), New, Email, and fill it out from there.

  175. 207 jun January 13, 2009 at 8:53 am

Thanks for the reply! I successfully added an e-mail to my phonebook. I just want to make sure I understand about the gateway.

So, let’s say I emailed my phone from my Comcast account and that shows up with a number of 345-6 (not actual #). I go to the settings on my phone and make my email gateway 345-6. I can’t simply just reply to the message I received?

Here’s what I’ve tried this morning:
    1. Made entry for my Comcast e-mail address.
    2. Set gateway to 345-6.
    3. Write message. Select entry from phonebook. Send.
    4. Set gateway to 500.
    5. Repeat step 3.

So far, nothing has showed up in my Comcast inbox.

  176. 208 Tiffany January 13, 2009 at 9:11 am

Why cant I send or receive an email from normal text mode? I have to do it from picture text mode which ends up costing me 1 minute instead of .3 am I doing something wrong?

jun – take out the Email gateway entry and reply to the email and see what happens.

Then without anything in the Email gateway, try this: in the message body, place as the very first thing in the message the email address in brackets then a space then your message. Sample:

    your message here

Then send the above to the 4 digit number you get when you send email to your phone.

If the above doesn’t work, then the entry in the Email gateway is probably not going to work either.

I originally was on the T-Mobile network, and even though I was able to make this work, I never could get pics sent, nor could I get my browser to work. So Tracfone sent me a new SIM card to put me on the AT&T network, and that works much better.

  178. 210 ortizmro January 13, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Tiffany – what network is your phone on? If you create an SMS/EMS message and send it to an email address, it will (should!) cost just .3 units. I just confirmed this on my phone. (Note: I am on the AT&T network).

Additionally, if you send a message from an email client, and you send to yourphonenumber@txt.att.net (this is for a Tracfone on the AT&T network) this will cost just .3 units to read on your phone. I also just confirmed this on my phone.

Since I am not on T-Mobile, I cannot confirm what it costs to send/receive on that network – I just do not recall. I thought it was the same.

  179. 211 jun January 13, 2009 at 1:21 pm

    Okay, here’s what I tried.

    1. Removed e-mail gateway setting.
    2. Replied to e-mail from my Comcast account. Nothing.
    3. Began text message with my Comcast e-mail address with [] around it and sent to the 345-6 # associated with that address. Nothing.
    4. Began text message with my Comcast e-mail address with () around it and sent to the 345-6 # associated with that address. Nothing.

    Ortizmro…
I dont think Im on AT&T when I tryed to send it with regular text nothing happen… I never got email to my computer or phone so had to send it by picture text then got it but it cost me a minute. The email address when it came to my email box was mynumber@mmst5.tracfone.com.

OH WAIT! In the text that came to my email box it said this text came from T mobile. SO if anyone knows how I can send regular text email with T mobile that doesnt cost more than .3 units please let me know.

    Thanks.

Sorry for the double post but I just have one more question…
Is the SIM card sealed in the battery? The reason why I ask is that Ive heard people mention the SIM card & I know that my moms was an actual little card (she doesnt have this phone) that I put in with the battery but I didnt get a card with this phone nor was there any instructions for installing a SIM card.

    Thanks.

I’m delighted with the discovery of this blog. This is a great service and resource. I got the W376g primarily for the bluetooth capability for use as an emergency phone in our 2008 Mercury Milan. It paired with the Sync system in the car easily with a PIN displayed by the car, and now I can take incoming calls using the cars sound system. The incoming call rings and I connect by touching the appropriate button on the steering wheel. My disappointments are downloading of the phone’s phonebook is not supported and because the W376g does not have voice dialing I must dial each outgoing call with the phone itself. I think if I could get my phonebook downloaded to “SYNC” I could do “hands free” dialing. Anybody have a suggestion on a work around?
I got TF’s universal accessory kit, which includes a case for the phone and a car charger with a multitude of adapters for various phone manufacturers, and headsets with mic for both Motorola and Nokia phones.
The sound quality is great, both with the phone and the car speakers. I was surprised that Tiffany had her service time transferred; TF tech support told me they couldn’t make that transfer and I lost six months that I had paid extra for. They transferred only the number and units and that took more than a week.
The battery drain seems to be greatly increased by having the bluetooth function on. Does anyone know if there is a TF with both bluetooth capability including data transfer and voice function or will I have to change service providers? Overall, I’m pleased with the phone and TF’s prices.
Thanks again for the useful information you’ve made available.

  183. 216 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 7:41 am

Tiffany – that email address does in fact indicate T-Mobile service. There is another form of email address that should work for your phone: yournumber@tmomail.net. I don’t know if you will be charged differently, but you can try it out.

Regarding the SIM card, it is not in the battery. For reference, here is a link to the actual user’s manual for the w376g (Tracfone provides only a “Tracfone guide” in their packaging):

    http://www.motorola.com/Hellomoto/Master%20Lists/Product%20Manuals/Static%20Files/US-EN/W377g_UG_.pdf

If you look at page 11 of the manual, the arrow indicates the location of the SIM card in the lower picture on the left. It’s in the battery compartment, just below where the battery sits, held in by a small silver clip. You should be able to read the word “SIM” on the card (with the battery removed).

  184. 217 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 7:44 am

jun – you’re not including that hyphen in the number that you are sending to, are you? You shouldn’t. And have you tried to send to a different email address (if you have another one)? I am running out of ideas for you to try…

  185. 218 jun January 14, 2009 at 8:41 am

No, I’m not typing the hyphen, but when it shows me the screen with the recipient and subject and stuff, then the hyphen is there.

I just tried sending it to my work e-mail by beginning the message with the e-mail address in []s and sending to the 345-6 # associated with my work e-mail address, but that didn’t work either.

  186. 219 Tiffany January 14, 2009 at 9:30 am

So is the SIM card already in the phone when you get it? I will try that email tip thanks. If it works then I just have to figure out a way to email from my phone to email without it costing me a whole unit.

  187. 220 Tiffany January 14, 2009 at 10:29 am

    yournumber@tmomail.net didnt work. =(
It just came back to my email undeliverable.

  188. 221 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 1:33 pm

jun – one last idea. Try sending to 36245. Some have used that with success.

  189. 222 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 2:13 pm

jun – Actually don’t try that 36245. That’s for AT&T. Here’s the reference I was using for Email Gateways:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gateways#Carrier-provided_SMS_to_email_gateways

Don’t know if it helps. By the way, can you access the Internet (Tracfone Web Browser) with your phone? Can you send pics (successfully) to/from your phone? If data services don’t work properly on your phone (they did not on mine when I had T-Mobile service), then you may end up calling Tracfone and requesting an AT&T SIM card after all…..

    Good luck.

  190. 223 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Tiffany – yes, the SIM card is already in the phone installed.

To email from your phone to email – are you sending just a plain text message i.e., SMS/EMS message? If so, that definitely should cost just .3 units. The MMS messages cost more than .3 units, as well as if you are sending pics attached to a message (they attach to an MMS message) – that will definitely cost you more than .3 units. This is all normal.

Did you say you tried sending a plain text (SMS/EMS) message to an email account and it didn’t go through? Be advised that you cannot attach anything (pics etc) to an SMS/EMS message…

  191. 224 jun January 14, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Yes, I can access the browser and also send pictures FROM my phone. A friend tried to send a picture TO my phone, though, and I couldn’t see it.

  192. 225 Tiffany January 14, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Yeah I tryed to send the email through plain text (no attachments or anything) & it didnt work. I tryed it with the original trick given on this site & then sending it to an email in my address book on the phone & that didnt work either. So thats why I tryed the other text (picture text… didnt send a picture or anything) & that went through but of course cost me more which sucks. Its so frustrating is it that stupid T Mobile? I wish I didnt have that if it is because I really want to send email. =(

  193. 226 ortizmro January 14, 2009 at 7:18 pm

jun – by chance does it work for you to send an MMS message from your phone? Another user here (Tiffany) cannot send an SMS message, but MMS goes thru fine.

  194. 227 jun January 15, 2009 at 9:16 am

    Success!!

I sent an MMS message to an e-mail stored in the phonebook, and it worked!

Thank you for all of your help!

  195. 228 Grizzly Smith January 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Just got my new W376G. Very pretty.

Having read the “horror stories” here about moving over numbers from old Tracfones to new, usually requiring getting a new SIM card, I decided to activate it online with a new number. Didn’t work.

Called “Customer Care.” I note that I just got laid off by a US Customer Care company because we can’t get any business. So, I call the nice lady in Bangalore, India…

After the usual give-me-your-various-numbers part of the script, I get the news. They’ve shipped me a SIM card for the wrong area code (which makes me wonder why they bothered asking for my ZIP code when I ordered). So I still have to go through the same process I was trying avoid. And upon inquiry, the nice lady in Bangalore couldn’t promise that if (later) I decide to recover my old number (still attached to the cellphone I dropped at Best Buy), I wouldn’t have to have yet another SIM card shipped to me.

One could argue that it’s a good thing I’m laid off. I didn’t have to miss half a day of work waiting for delivery of a phone I can’t use.

    (sigh)

But at least it’s prettier than my decade-old Nokia.

I wonder if it’d work to go to Best Buy or WalMart, buy a different Moto Tracfone, and swap SIMs.

Is it a good, useful phone, a worthwhile investment of $40? I have no idea.

  196. 229 AllanA77 January 15, 2009 at 2:05 pm

In regards to Bluetooth use in vehicles… Don’t have any answers for built-in units. However, I do have a new Magellan Maestro 4350 GPS with Bluetooth capabilities and my Tracfone Motorola 376g paired up with it without any problems.

  197. 230 Tiffany January 15, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Yeah it worked but it costs us a whole minute… sucks! I guess I should just be happy its possible to send email lol. *sigh* Wish I had AT&T instead of T Mobile.

  198. 231 melinda January 23, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Is there a way I can restrict incoming calls or if that feature isn’t available is there a way to assign a silent or no (or even vibrate) ring to all but the calls I want to accept? I purchased this phone for my young son mainly as a safety issue for when we go on vacation or to the big theme parks & malls etc…I would like for there to just be maybe 4-5 people that can call him.
In the past I have gotten a tracfone for my older son when he was younger and we had a big problem with telemarketers somehow getting his # and calling his phone…so I’m trying to avoid that with this phone..

    • 232 pbushx2 January 26, 2009 at 5:49 pm

      Hi Melinda
If you have the same problem with getting unwanted calls to a TracFone, it is likely that the number has been “recycled” and the number itself was previously assigned to a different person. If that’s the case, you should be able to call TracFone and ask for a new number. On the w376g, there is a way to assign specific ringtones to different callers and groups of callers, so I think that you could put all of your “safe” numbers into a group with very loud ringtone assigned to it, and then set it up so that anyone not in that group rings with a different, quieter tone. I haven’t tried this myself though. I also would be a little concerned with this for safety reasons. For example, what if your son needs to call 911, gets disconnected, and the dispatch tries to call him back? Or if you are in an emergency situation where you need to call your son from a phone other than your own, he wouldn’t realize you are trying to reach him.
These are just a few of my thoughts. I think that your best bet is to make sure you get a “clean” phone number, not a “recycled” one.

  199. 233 DKW January 24, 2009 at 6:14 pm

Once in a while, for NO apparent reason, my w376g Phone will emit 2 short,low-level tones/beeps, the 2nd one sounding after an interval of about 25 secs;No messages, voice mails,or calls coming through,ONLY THOSE 2 sounds. It’s as if the phone wants you to know it’s still alive and kicking- Go figure. Has anyone else experienced these 2, mystery tones/beeps, and know why they occur??

  200. 234 NLK January 26, 2009 at 11:17 am

I’m wondering if I can use my sim card reader to transfer pictures from my phone to computer. Anyone ever tried that?

  201. 235 ortizmro January 27, 2009 at 9:11 am

NLK – You cannot put pics on the SIM card. Only phone book entries and text messages.

  202. 236 ortizmro January 28, 2009 at 7:27 am

Regarding unwanted calls from telemarketers – you could also put that cell phone number (and home phone numbers!) in the national Do Not Call registry:

    https://www.donotcall.gov/

It’s free and it might help.

  203. 237 Christy January 31, 2009 at 11:00 am

Generally happy with my W376g, thanks for the blog and all these great questions. Was wondering if there is a way to set the phone to automatically turn off. My old phone the V170 had the ability and it saved my battery life, as I always forget to turn it off. Thanks in Advance!!

  204. 238 ortizmro February 1, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Christy – Sorry to say that the w376g does not have an automatic power on/off feature.

  205. 239 Amy February 15, 2009 at 11:16 am

I agree to all of the bad things. I always hit my web access acidentally and so far i lost 15 minutes to it! This is really bad.

    • 240 pbushx2 February 16, 2009 at 4:47 pm

      Hi Amy
One thing that I think I’ve forgotten to mention on here, which didn’t occur to me when I first started using the phone – if you accidentally start the web browser, snap the phone shut immediately and you won’t lose any airtime. It works more quickly than fumbling around for the “exit” option.

  206. 241 joe February 18, 2009 at 1:53 am

I purchased two w376g for the spouse and myself. they seem ok. until the text feature quit recieving messages from other phones. We can still text each other only. Is there any way to resolve this.

    • 242 pbushx2 February 18, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Hi Joe. I’ve never heard of such a problem. I would definite try a call to TracFone about that one – try this number: 1-800-339-9345. It will get you in touch with more empowered customer service people than the standard 800 number.

  207. 243 joe February 22, 2009 at 4:14 pm

HI pb, thanks for the info the phone number worked with no misunderstood english, tracfone rep took my info, phone serial numbers and are reprogramming phones on their end, In four hours we can give the texting to grandkids another try. We have our fingers crossed.

I am now on a replacement phone from Tracfone and I can finally send MMS messages – sometimes. It always says message sent successfully to email, but I am finding many are not going through. My father has the same problem with his Tracfone, but with different email addresses. I can send to ones that he cannot and vice versa. Has this happened to anyone else??

Just picked this phone up for a separate business line. Was on sale at Radio Shack for $29.99! The $49.99 Unlimited Double Minutes for life really rocks, w/ a $29.99 card that comes out to 12.5 cents per minute, w/ no hidden fees. Pretty good for a prepaid, and easy to track.

  213. 249 KT March 23, 2009 at 6:35 pm

I just purchased this phone and am looking for accessories to personalize it on the outside. I’ve searched for skins, cases, shells, etc. and haven’t had any luck. Are there any such items for this phone? Is this phone’s layout the same as another Moto phone?
    Thanks so much!

  214. 251 TraceyM March 25, 2009 at 2:51 am

I bought the phone with free unlimited double minutes for life (Walmart, $29.99) but how do you activate the unlimited double minutes? The third step in the activation process asks you for a pin number or a promo code that’s supposed to be on the register receipt but there isn’t anything there. Did the cashier mess up or am I missing something?

I’m afraid to continue the activation beyond this step because I’m worried I’ll be out of the “free double minutes for life” thing and it’s one of the main reasons I bought the phone.

    • 252 pbushx2 March 30, 2009 at 3:56 pm

      Hi Tracey
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Step 3 is where TracFone is trying to get you to add an airtime card right away. You don’t have to do this. At the bottom of the gray box, there’s a button to “skip this step.” Click that, and you can move to the next step. And don’t worry about not getting DMFL. ALL w376g’s automatically are given DMFL on activation.

  215. 253 technologiclee March 25, 2009 at 4:05 am

    Tracfone Motorola W376g

    1) My original question and search that lead me to this site: (appears solved -maybe)

The screen was staying on after I closed the lid, I could see it still on between the closed lid and case – then go to screensaver then the screen would turn off. After the screensaver turned off, I would open the lid and the screen would still be off – until I pressed a key. After reading about turning the phone off/on in regards to caller ID problems, I tried it for this problem and the screen seems to shut off normally again when I close the lid.

A few minutes later the screen stayed on while lid closed again – screen shut off properly with second closing. I have no way to tell, but I do not think it is the internal switch – I believe that it is the software.

    2) In regards to computer to phone USB charging:

Acer 4620Z laptop running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope -USB cable seems to charge (external/internal charge indicators/tone activate)

Eight Virtues 007 PC running Linux 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope – Does appear to charge though the front USB outlet

Acer 4620Z laptop running windows Vista – When plugged into the USB cable the charge tone sounds, but no front/internal charging indicators. A Windows dialogue offers to look for the driver. Click ‘yes’ and it searches, eventually stating the device is unplugged (it was still connected).

The USB to Mini USB cable that I used came with a laptop cooling fan.

    3) Linux Questions:

Can any version of Linux be loaded onto this phone and if so, how?

    4) Other software I would like to use with my phone:

4a) Anyremote -So that I can use the phone as a remote control for a computer to do things like operate a music player.
    http://anyremote.sourceforge.net/

Requires a Java applet to be loaded onto the phone.
Does this phone have Java? I have tried to send the .jar via bluetooth it did not seem to work.

4b) Blue Proximity -To lock and unlock the computer based on the strength (therefore distance) of the phones bluetooth signal.
Seems to have found the phones mac address but does not seem to report the proximity
    http://www.stuartaxon.com/2008/02/09/blue-proximity/

    5) Software wishlist:

I recenly found karaoke programs for linux. It would be nice if people could connect to my computers via bluetooth and use their phones as microphones. Any ideas?

    • 254 pbushx2 March 30, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Wow, technologicalee, that’s a lot to respond too, but I’ll try. First, I have not come across the issue of the screen staying on when the phone is flipped shut, so I’m afraid I can’t help you there. I don’t think that you can load any software on to this phone; at least, I haven’t heard of anyone doing so successfully, and I do a lot of listening for that sort of thing. Pretty much, the bluetooth and USB are useless as far as connecting to a computer. The mini USB on the phone can be used only for chargers (car charger or wall charger, but not USB charger), and the Bluetooth can be used only for voice, not any kind of data. If there’s a way to do the microphone thing you are talking about, I doubt that it would work with this particular phone since the bluetooth is so restricted.

  216. 255 jstutz March 28, 2009 at 11:27 pm

    Hi guys,
I purchased the LG 600G and was frustrated to find that i am charged .30 units per PAGE of text messaging, not .30 units per text. My old motorola charged .30 for a text, regardless of length.
Please tell me, does the w376g phone charge just .30 units per text, or does it charge you more for a longer text? Also, does the bluetooth work? I have a mac. Thanks. I am seriously considering returning the LG just because of the excessive texting charges. I sent my husband a 2 sentence text (didn’t seem long to me) and was charged .90 units!

    Thanks.
    jstutz

  217. 256 Halwpe March 29, 2009 at 12:09 am

I have the W376g and a Mac. Do not expect to communicate with a Mac or PC. Motorola so advises you and the phone has no data transmission capability. My phone readily paired with my Mercury Milan’s Sync system, but I cannot download my phonebook (or use voice commands because they aren’t available on the W376g). The Sync system would respond to voice commands if the phone were so equipped and the dealer suggested I buy another phone to avail myself of these features. I don’t think TracFone has any voice command phones with bluetooth. The phone uses the car’s stereo system for conversation and the sound quality is great. It is paired from the instant I turn the phone on now. If a call comes in I can answer it by tapping a button on the steering wheel. From the comments on this blog, I deduce that the pairing process is vehicle manufacturer specific and there have been many reports of difficulty pairing on this blog. My car displayed a code that I keyed in using the phone and the pairing was instant. The Sync system instruction book that I received with the car provided easy to follow directions.

  218. 257 Tracfone Girl March 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm

    Hi All,
I’ve been looking to upgrade my Tracfone. THANK YOU!!! I purchased a W376g to replace the V170 for $29.99. Using the advice and tips here, I was able to transfer my phone number, double the existing units from 984 to 1968 in W376g-online and without my kid’s assistance!!!
When I purchase the Bluetooth, I’ll be back.

  219. 258 ortizmro March 31, 2009 at 6:42 am

jstutz – Yes, I believe that is standard – .3 units per page of text, so if you send a really long (more than 160 characters) text message, then each additional page of text will cost an additional .3 units. It’s not tied to the phone, so don’t return that phone just based on this. The w376g does the same thing. If you sent a 2 sentence text and it cost .9 units, the sentences must have been really, really long (?) One page of text can contain 160 characters and will cost just .3 units. Make sure you are sending SMS/EMS, not MMS. MMS does cost more.

Bluetooth in the w376g is crippled – all you can do is communicate with a Bluetooth headset and a Bluetooth car device. The w376g Bluetooth cannot communicate with a computer.

  220. 259 David Lee April 3, 2009 at 10:37 pm

    Aloha,

Is there a way to stop that loud beeping sound in the phone while you are talking. I believe it’s counting down the minutes but we don’t need to hear the beeps.

    David

  221. 261 Richard Ballard April 5, 2009 at 1:24 am

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of getting one of these until I read it. Being tied to someone else’s idea of an MP3 ring-tone just isn’t for me, nor the idea that I can’t connect to my PC in any fashion. I like making my own music and using it.

  222. 263 baclava April 5, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Just wanted to say these reviews have been a goldmine of info.
    Thanks.

This year was the year I needed to upgrade my Trafone and the double minutes and $29.99 price of the w376g from Walmart was the deal.

Bought the one-year card and the phone, took it home and called Tracfone and they rolled over my existing phone credits – in 15 minutes right over the phone – everything was up and running with no problems.

That ATT card address for sending e-mails to the phone was excellent.

    (your10digitcellnumber)@mms.att.net

I e-mailed myself some cool ringtones from a free site.
Downloaded them to my computer first, then attached them in the e-mail. Worked like a charm.

    http://www.mididelight.com/classic-rock

I have no complaints about the phone – even dropped it a couple times on a carpeted floor – it bounced up about 2 feet, no worse for wear.

    • 264 pbushx2 April 5, 2009 at 9:21 pm

      baclava,
Thanks for referring that site. I’ll have to check it out some time soon.

Can you help me with the ringtone thing. I downloaded a few from the site you listed. I sent one via email to my phone. Now I’m not sure how I get that to show up in the Sounds section? Thanks for any help!

Great Blog .Lots of good info. Just wanted to post this warning in case theres another person out there this stupid .Upgraded from the V170 to the W376g . Transferred my old # and minutes via the TF website . Everything worked great until…. I pressed and held the 1 key to call my voicemail and a message came up No voice mail # stored. Well at that time I had no idea what my voicemail # was. I noticed above the left soft key it said STORE so I pushed it like an idiot and sure enough it took me to a screen where I could store a voicemail # Well I inadvertantly hit the 1 key and while trying to clear that and get away from there I hit something and got the message “Number stored” . So now when press the 1 key it says”Fail” . Well after spending all weekend on the phone with CS and them resettimg my voicemail account repeatedly (even though I told them to stop doing it ) I still have the same problem . No matter who I talked to I would exlain and they would say press and hold the 1 key until it calls your voicemail . IT WONT DO THAT !!! only 4 simple words but evidently waaaaay more than a tracfone CS rep can comprehend . I have been through the entire menu of this phone 50 times and there is no option to go in and change this .I finally emailed Motorola and asked for their help/ Today they sent me an email telling me how to do it on their 376 software but evidently when tracfone installs their software this option is no longer there. I finally just put my TF # in my phonebook and set it for speed dial #2 (won’t work on #1) and so now I just press and hold the 2 key instead . Problem solved but I just didn’t want anyone else to make this mistake if it happened to them . Unbeleivable that I can not fix this or get tracfone to even understand the whole problem LOL . Other than my own stupidity I love the phone . I think the sound is way better than the V170 . I have downloaded a few MP3 ringtones and they sound great but aren’t really loud enough to suit me . Also love the speakerphone option .

this is a badass phone! im surprised the phone doesnt lose memory when the battery pops out by accident. on the guide, it says things like dont expose it to cold weather and dont drop it, ive dropped it on the ground by accident a bunch of times. ive also exposed and used it in cold weather before, and im amazed that it still werks. the fm radio is one of my favs to do when im bored. does anyone else have their phone radio set to 93x? i once had the radio on speaker, turned up all the way with it about 2cm from my ear, and my ears didnt ring afterwards. baaaaadass!!!!

Is there any way to change the number of rings on the Motorala W376? I can’t find any option on the phone, so I called Tracfone and a rep told me that it cannot be changed. However, a friend of mine said that she read somewhere to insist on talking with a technician and it did get changed? Has anyone had this dilemma and solved it? Thanks!

  227. 272 ortizmro April 15, 2009 at 6:09 am

Dimensions, Space-time, etc. – I don’t know if you can get it changed or not. I think I read somewhere that someone claims they got Tracfone to make this sort of change. Think it was someone complaining about the phone going to voicemail too quickly. Instead of calling Tracfone’s regular number for support, you might try calling them at: 1-800-876-5753 or 1-800-339-9345. These numbers are for Executive Resolutions, and should be called during “normal” business hours (i.e., not the weekend). Might make a difference.

it’s very difficult to take pics outdoors on 376g. can not see the subject. all i get is a reflection of myself or surrounding area behind me on the screen. basically i’m pointing and shooting hoping to get the shot. any tips on how to see the subject easily?

    • 274 pbushx2 April 23, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Dave – I see what you’re saying, but I’m not sure I can offer a solution. The best I can do is to suggest that you cup one hand over the screen to shield out back light as much as possible. Maybe someone else has a solution?

Thank you for detailed info on this blog! It’s helped me both with choosing this phone and with operating it.
One problem: According to the online manual (page 47), I can assign individual ringtones in addition to my main “Line 1″ ringtone. I purchased and downloaded 4 ringtones from Tracfone and got them them into each of my phonebook entries, but I still just get my main ringtone whenever one of these contacts calls me. I called Tracfone where they informed me that my W376g does not have this option, even though the manual seems to imply otherwise. To further add to my disappointment, they refused to reimburse me for the minutes spent to purchase and download the 4 ringtones in anticipation of assigning them.
Is there a workaround to this? Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I have a question. Is anyoen aware of how to get a Call History of calls made? I tried TracFone’s website but do not see an option for it. I am hoping to retrieve some numbers that I had dialed that no longer show on the list in my actual phone. Thanks for any help that can be offered!

  231. 277 ortizmro May 8, 2009 at 11:27 am

Valerie – I haven’t downloaded any ringtones for my w376g, but you should be able to change the ringtone for any phonebook entry in the phonebook. I have different ones from the default sounds that are in my phone assigned to different people. That page in the manual is wrong by the way – but I’m sure you figured that out. To set the ring ID you change the Sound entry not the Picture entry. Then go to the location where you have your downloaded sound. Then it should work.

Of course, I am assuming your phone book is stored on your phone, and not on your SIM card. You cannot do this for entries stored on your SIM card.

  232. 278 ortizmro May 8, 2009 at 11:29 am

InNeedOfHelp – I don’t know of any way of doing that, and don’t believe there is any such thing for a Tracfone.

  233. 279 Valerie May 11, 2009 at 10:11 am

Ortizmro, thanks for responding. Just like several times before, I took all the steps you said to try with no problem. I have different ringtones assigned to separate, individual contact listings but still get my main ringtone when any of these contacts call.
The SIM issue is an area I haven’t explored yet, though. I, too, assume my contacts are stored on my phone and not my SIM card, but how can I check for sure?

  234. 280 Russ May 12, 2009 at 7:04 am

Been using this phone for a few months now and for the most part like it except for the SLOW browser and downloading ringtones costing about 9 units plus the time it takes for browsing for them. My question is…Is there any way to remove the date from the screen? I hate how it is in the center or just left of center of the screen, I would like it on the bottom by the time or gone completely.

  235. 281 katie May 12, 2009 at 4:43 pm

do you know of any tracfones other than the nokia 1100 that let you receive texts free?

  236. 282 John May 12, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I TRIED To download a ringtone, but it wouldn’t let me. It said “Cannot Load” or something.

  237. 283 ortizmro May 13, 2009 at 6:02 am

Russ – sorry, there is no known way of removing the date from the screen.

  238. 284 ortizmro May 13, 2009 at 6:04 am

katie – the following are known to provide free incoming text messages.

    Nokia 1100, 2600, 3390,
    Motorola V170, C155
    Rate:
0.3 to send, Free to receive sms.

  239. 285 ortizmro May 13, 2009 at 6:11 am

Valerie – The only way that my phone uses the main ringtone for my contacts is if the Sound entry for the contact is None.

Maybe the ringtones you are trying don’t work properly? When you try to select the ringtones do you hear them play at all? Have you tried to select any of the ones that came with the phone instead of one of those you purchased?

I tried this again in my phone, and it works fine, I can assign different sounds to different contacts in my address book, and when they call it rings with the assigned sound, but I have not purchased any ringtones. I just use the ones that came with the phone, and they work fine.

  240. 286 Krado May 13, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Hello, loved your review. I currently have a w370 which has worked out pretty well so far. I have been sending polyphonic (midi) ringtones and my own wall papers to this model using a free Yahoo! account. My carrier appears to be cingular and supports this ie: yournumber@mms.att.net. The trick is, you can only send midi files that are within a 20 second or so limit and the images have to be the resolution the phone can handle. For the w370, 128×160 (jpeg or gif). note: if the midi contains more than 6 voices it may sound a bit funky because the phone will only play what it can handle. You can also send emails to the phone but only 140 to 160 characters in length to a different address. yournumber@cingularme.com

I haven’t decided on the w376 because I’m tired of jumping through TracFone’s hoops! The selling point for the w376 would be the camera, but VGA with no flash means sketchy pix in low light. If I get another TracFone it would most likely be the w376 and your review helped me to determine this. Thanks!

  241. 287 Austin May 13, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Why hasn’t someone taken some example photos with this phone and placed them in this blog? Is the picture quality that bad?

  242. 288 John May 13, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    Hi –

Just bought the W376g because of the camera and when I got home discovered that it is not able to transfer pics via usb. I know that my photos are stored in “additional Storage Device”. Is it possible that this “ASD” is the sim card and I can transfer them with a $20. sim card reader from Radio Shack?

  243. 289 ortizmro May 14, 2009 at 5:51 am

Valerie – Forgot to address the issue of checking to see if your contacts are on the SIM card or on the phone. The default storage location for contacts is the phone, so unless you changed the location, your contacts are likely stored on your phone. To check one, highlight a contact, select the main menu button (center round button), then Edit, and look at the Store To entry.

  244. 290 josh May 14, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Just a note on the 376g (and 370g) You can change the “Browser” button to be another task (I have mine to be “calender”).
The FM can’t work w/o the ear piece because the earpeice wire doubles as the antenna.

Overall; it’s a fine phone that “does the job” if you don’t want frills. I actually upgraded from the 370g (no camera) — at 1st I didn’t think I wanted a camera, but turns out; I actually had a use for it the other day; so another $20 and I bought the 376g.

The biggest two things that are (IMHO) major negatives for TracFone phones:
    1) You cannot use the USB to backup your phone book/calendar
    2) You cannot access your calendar once the sim has been deactivated (you can still get to your phone book) So be sure to write down all your calendar items before you transfer the service to a new phone.

The lack of ‘real browsing’ is a bummer, but I don’t need to be that “plugged in” – -besides at tracfone rates, I’d go broke quick!

Otherise, a great phone…. Less “standby” time than some of the other phones they offer, but I think “talk time” is the most important one… I’ve never gotten 10 days of standby with my 370g. It’s small; it works well; doesn’t look like an outdated cheap phone…recommended.

    • 291 pbushx2 May 19, 2009 at 9:23 pm

      Josh,
reassigning works for the left soft key, but I can’t seem to find a way to do the same thing for the dedicated browser button – the one that looks like a little globe, below the left soft key.

  245. 292 ortizmro May 15, 2009 at 6:13 am

John – the only known way to transfer pics with the w376g is via email. Image files cannot be put on the SIM card – wish they could. The Additional Storage Device is storage space on the phone, not on the SIM card.

    Thanks!

Ortizmro and all– My son, who used to work for a cellphone company, happened to be in town for a visit and discovered my ringtone problem in 30 seconds, LOL. He said to just make sure that all my local contacts (the ones I couldn’t get ringtones to play for) have the area code prefixes as part of their numbers in the phonebook, even though you technically don’t need them for local usage. I couldn’t believe something so simple and seemingly irrelevant would work, but… voila! I’m guessing all of you here knew enough to do this to begin with and assumed I would know it, too, but I’m a little new to the cellphone world.
Thank you everyone for your time and attention to trying to help me solve my problem… even though the problem persisted, I learned other, helpful things about my new phone that I wouldn’t have found elsewhere :)

  248. 296 ortizmro May 18, 2009 at 6:06 am

Valerie – Thanks for sharing that information. I did not realize that it was only affecting some of your contacts. I have always put in my contacts with area codes, so I guess that’s why was not able to replicate the problem. Glad it’s all fixed now.

  249. 297 ortizmro May 20, 2009 at 6:27 am

Tom in Seattle – Don’t know of a way to do this since you can’t send html thru plain text messages.

    • 298 Tom in Seattle May 20, 2009 at 8:59 am

I was afraid of that. Thank you very much!

Ortizmro, I just realized that you could have taken my reply two ways. When I said “Thank you very much,” I wasn’t being sarcastic. I meant “Thank you very much for your reply.”

There, I feel much better now. :)

Info from you guys has been a BIG help. Had poor to no reception where I live on my new W376g phone with no help from TracFone customer service. Asked TracFone to replace my T-Mobile SIM with an AT&T SIM. As advised in other responses, it took some persistance but they finally sent the AT&T SIMM. I now have GREAT reception thanks to your help!

Is the USB-to-computer lockout a lockout put in place by Motorola at Tracfone’s request or is it a Tracfone lockout? Is it a hardware or software/firmware lockout?

Can unlocking the phone fix the the USB lock issue?

Can Tracfone tell that it’s their phone after the unlock and refuse to activate it or honor the free double minutes that come with the phone? What if I unlock the phone after activating it with Tracfone

Oh Family Dollar sells the Motorola W376g with free double minutes for life for $25.

    • 303 pbushx2 May 27, 2009 at 7:26 pm

I’m not completely sure, but I think it’s a firmware lockout, as the usb connection can still work for charging the phone, if you have the appropriate driver on your computer. However, it’s probably a moot point as I’ve never heard of anyone successfully unlocking this model.

      • 304 Smaug May 27, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Well any phone can be “Carrier Unlocked” eventually if that is what you were referring to.

If you were referring to unlocking the USB-to-computer block I’ll bet one of your readers can ’suss it out’ if they put their minds to it.

Are there other Tracfones with the same features that can upload to pictures to a computer? The descriptions they give are really slim.

    Subject: Tracfone W376b/T-Mobil Messaging

I am very grateful for all of the info provided in this forum and want to summarize what I have found. Some info came from Wikipedia also.

In addition I am seeking help in sending MMS messages to my computer so that I can get the picutes.

    SMS:
    The following worked for me:
    A) Computer (email) to w376g
    1)send email to ‘my_phone_no”@tmomail.net
    2)send email to ‘my_phone_no”@mmst5.tracfone.com
(replying from my w376 to the message seems to come from 3xxx and not my email address)

    B) w376 to computer
    1) send text to the 4 digit code (3xxx) obtained above which was stored in the phone book as a phone number. No email gateway
    2) use 500 as the sendto phone number and create a text message containing the actual email address, space, subject (optional), message. No email gateway
    3) set ‘500′ as Email Gateway and send text msg to the actual email address as stored in the phonebook.

    MMS:
    A) w376g to another cellphone
Fails with message to resend from outbox; that also fails even after several tries.
    B) w376g to email
I am unable to send pictures/tones/etc to my computer no matter what combination of the above codes/phone nos/email addresses I try. I always receive a failure notification incicating that the messge failed and that I should resend from the outbox. The latter also fails.
    C) Computer to w376
Messages seem to arive at the w376 (or at least notification). When I ‘download’ to the phone I get a message that I should try latter or process failed.

I have seen comments herin that give me the impression that MMS from a T-Mobil equiped w376g does not work “PERIOD” and that the only resulation is to obtain an ATT SIM card.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

  253. 306 ortizmro May 29, 2009 at 6:18 am

Smaug – The LG600G can upload pics to a computer via Bluetooth. With other Tracfones that have cameras, you have to e-mail the pics to get them off the phone.

  254. 307 dick blaine May 29, 2009 at 4:04 pm

    Subject: w376g , Tracfone, T-MOBIL & MMS

I am well aware that the only way to get pictures off a w376g is to email. That is precicly what I can NOT do and the reason for my message above.

No combination of email gateway, email/phone number, etc will allow me to email pictures to another cell phone or to my computer.

Has any reader been able to email pictures from a w376g to another cell phone or computer? IF so, what were your settings?

  255. 308 dac May 30, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Just purchased the W376 after much research, and after finding this blog on Goggle. I’ve has Sprint for 12 years, recently moved to an area with real ‘fringe service’, and rarely use my phone except when out in the vehicle.

My 376 now has service throughout the house without having to walk an acre away for a signal. In fact, everywhere I’ve gone in the past week (real fringe areas in WV), I always had service. I checked my simm and it is an ATT card.

My previous plan was limited as I got it while I was still a deputy through the FOP, and ended up paying monthly bills for only a handful on minutes. So going TRAC has become my best bet, and the 376 even better yet.

Thanks for ALL the info on this blog.

  256. 309 ortizmro June 1, 2009 at 6:20 am

dick blaine – My w376g originally had the T-Mobile SIM card in it and the data services (emailing pics, and the web browser) did not work at all. I called Tracfone and they sent me an AT&T SIM card. When you receive the AT&T SIM card, you will still have to call them and change some other settings to make sure everything works properly, but that should solve your problem.

    Subj: W376g/Tracfone/MMS My msg of 5/28 11:41am

Thanks, to ortizmro for working with me.

My problem is resolved – thanks to Tracfone Customer Service.

The problem was that although the sim card was coded for t-mobil, the phone was coded for cingular (att). I suspect that most people with w376g phones with t-mobil sim cards can easily resolve the MMS problem by doing the following:

    1) call tracfone and describe thay you are unable to send MMS message and text messages to your computrer.

    2) ask the customer service rep to walk you thru the steps to look at the following code parameters:
    115 – should be “PG Port 8080; 216.155.165.40″
    and
    122 – should be “http://mms.tracfone.com”

If these parameters have anything else, the service rep will send codes to update these locations.

Since updating my phone I can reliablly send MMS and text messages to my email address, and, using:
    ‘my 10-digit phone no’.tmomail.net’,
send messages with or without attachments from my computer to my phone.

I hope that this information help othjer t-mobil users of the w376g (and possibly, other) phone.

My phone originally has a link to cingular

  258. 311 ortizmro June 3, 2009 at 6:27 am

dick blaine – Thanks for the info. You highlight the point I was trying to make. If you change out the SIM card in a Tracfone(i.e., to change from AT&T to T-Mobile or the other way around) you MUST call Tracfone because there are other things in the phone (parameters) that must be changed to accomodate the new service. It is not as simple as just changing the SIM card! Some parameters must also be changed!

What would be good is to have posted here what the appropriate AT&T parameters are – for those who change from T-Mobile to AT&T.

  259. 312 dick blaine June 3, 2009 at 8:14 am

    Subj: W376b Tracfone Att Activation

For w376g’s which come with ATT (Cingular) sim cards the parameters in the phone are as follows:

    115: “PG port=80; 66.209.11.32″
    and
    122: “http://mmsc.cingular.com”

Users should call Tracfone to assist in displaying and/or modifing these parameters.

    Just so you know:
I upgraded from Nokia 1100 to Motorola W376g and transfered my units and renewal date. (I had to do it via the phone because the on-line transfer would not transfer my units correctly). I noticed that the phone number lised in phone was incorrect. My transfered phone number was working and the phone does ring & connect using my transfered number. I emailed TracFone to please update my phone listing to my CORRECT phone and here is their response:

Thank you for your interest in TracFone Wireless. We are responding to your recent inquiry.

In November 2003, the F.C.C. required all telephone companies, including wireless telephone companies, to implement plans to conserve telephone numbers. The industry implemented number conservation and enabled its systems to implement number portability as well. When they modified their systems to support number portability and number conservation, the wireless telephone companies had to associate a second number with the
telephone number for billing and call routing purposes.

This second number, which in some cases is different than your wireless number, must be programmed in your handset in order for your handset to work properly. Unfortunately because this number must be programmed into your phone, it is located where your wireless number would normally be programmed. To remedy the situation, you can program your wireless number in your phone’s directory.

If you forget your TracFone number, please contact one of our customer care representatives at 1-800-867-7183. For your convenience, our representatives are available Monday-Sunday from 8:00 AM to 9:45 PM EST.
To expedite your call, please have your TracFone handset and serial number available.

We would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any
inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Thank you for being a TracFone Wireless customer. We appreciate your business.

    Sincerely,

    TracFone Wireless

I am now successful in transfering pictures from my cell phone to my computer but the converse is not working; i.e., transfering gif or jpg files from my computer to my cell phone.

I get the messge that a message is ready to be downloaded but the result is always: “The message can not be adapted to your terminal”.
The pictures I am sending are 128 x 160 gif and jpg images.

Tracfone has no idea as to a fix; anyone have an idea?

    • 316 pbushx2 June 11, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Dick – based on what you are saying, I can’t identify the problem. Maybe ortizmro will have something to say about it – he’s the most knowledgeable person I know of when it comes to this model.

      • 317 ortizmro June 12, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I can’t say I know what the problem is yet. Question – can you send any pics at all to your phone, such as from another phone? The pics that you are trying to send to your phone – are they the same ones you sent from your phone to your computer? If so, try creating a copy of the pic, or a different pic that is the same size (dimensions), with a tool like Irfanview, and see if that makes a difference.

I haven’t tried that site specifically, but I”ve tried other, similar sites, and they didn’t work. I don’t think this one will either, but the worst that can happen, assuming you trust the site, is that you will have a minute or two deducted when you try to receive the download.

      • 322 ortizmro June 12, 2009 at 11:56 am

Based on experience of many others who have tried to send mp3 ringtones to this phone, it is not likely to work, so I wouldn’t bother. Sending a midi file to the phone is something known to work, but that doesn’t sound as good as an mp3.

  264. 323 derp June 11, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Yeah, I’m getting the same thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were another scheme to get you to buy their wallpapers… :/

    • 324 derp June 11, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Then again, can you send MMS messages with attachments from others phones?

      • 325 derp June 11, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Wow, I am talking to tracfone’s support about this right now, and they told me to send an MMS message to myself with one of the preloaded pictures.

Even then, it says “The message can not be adapted to your terminal”. I’m on hold right now, my rep is talking to her supervisor…

      • 326 derp June 11, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Oooh, and they just gave a trouble ticket and hung up.

Sorry for the large number of posts :<

A month ago, I pointed out that noone had posted any photos taken with this camera phone. I went ahead and bought it; $30 bucks, what the heck. The phone seems to be pretty adequate, and not bad by comparison to Samsung phones (I recently worked CST for Samsung Wireless).

As I feared, the camera is just so-so. Here are some examples of the pictures you can see. If a high-quality camera is one of your priorities, this is NOT the phone for you. However, i’ve found that upload times for emailing the photos to myself from the phone are pretty quick. It’s under a minute so I just get charged 1.5-2 units for it. Overall, I don’t regret upgrading to this phone from my still-unscratched Nokia candybar. At just $30, it will pay for itself the first time I add a 120 unit card to it. =)

    [img=http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/7506/010208004.jpg]

    [img=http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/4746/060609113.jpg]

I see the current topic is emailing photos to the camera; probably you’ll need to make sure they are exactly the right dimensions, under a certain maximum filesize, and probably use precisely the right encoding. Possibly, the phone even checks the EXIF info to decide whether it is a compatible format. Or the error message is just BS. Anyway, these photos could help folks to craft a compatible file to send themselves.

    Best of luck.

Ortizmro – re June 12 posting

I can’t even read a picture send from my cell phone to itself. Still get same message: “… can not apapt to your terminal”. I will try what you suggested. TF has a case number open.

  267. 329 Lora June 17, 2009 at 8:57 am

Thanks for the wonderful reviews. It convinced me to upgrade from my v170 to the w376g. I have just transferred my minutes and phone number. I can receive calls, but can not make calls. TracFone walked me through some troubleshooting which didn’t resolve the problem. They have opened up a trouble ticket. Before I call them back, does anyone have any ideas on what the issue might be and any suggestions on what to try. Thank you.

    Re W376g Tracfone T-Mobil – Pictures.

TF came thru for me again and resolved my problem (reading messages containing pictures sent from my computer). I always got “… unable to adapt message to terminal”) They had opened a case number and after 7 days fixed something – I do not know what – parameters 120 and 121 still refer to Cingular so that is not the fix.

Botom line is that I can now read and store a message containing a picture.

My opinion of TF techinal support has improved as they also solved my previous problem.

    W376g FM Radio

    1) I tried two radio shack adapters (3.5 mm male to 2.5 mm female) to adapt my 3.5 mm headphones to the headphone jack. Nither worked. One has a 4 conector 2.5 mm male rather than 3 conductor and the other is too long to work reliably (the shaft on the 2.5 mm mail is 11 mm – 9.5 – 10 mm is needed).

Can anyone recommend a source for a 3.5 to 2.5 mm headphone connector which actually works?

    Thanks in advance.

    • 332 ortizmro June 19, 2009 at 3:10 pm

I actually use that 2.5mm to 3.5 mm Cell to Stereo Adapter from Radio Shack to hook up my 3.5 mm stereo headphones to my w376g phone:

      http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2603246

It works great for me – of course, it’s not stereo, but I do get sound in both ear pieces of my headphones, and I am satisfied with it. If this is the one that you have tried, I cannot say why it doesn’t work for you.

    Re: W376g FM Radio

The radio is ok but is bi-monoral and not Stereo. The radio menu provides several functions as: station presets, hide, speaker phone/headset.

The on-screen keys do the following:

    Key – Function
    * – switch spkr to phones
    # – next preset
1-9 – specific preset (press and hold to store new preset)
    Up/down arrows – volume control
    left/right arrow – changes frequency by 0.2MHz
    Mute/listen – obvious
Hide – returns to main screen

Ortizmro Re 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter for w376g

It is amazing to me that the 4 conector adapter you are using actually works since that one is stereo to stero (4 connector male) and not the stereo to bi-monoral (3 connector male). I tried it but it did not fit properly and so, kept loosing connection.

I finally found the right parts but they have to be soldered together:

    1) Stero Right-Angle Submini Phone Plug (2.5 mm) 3 conductor male RS 2740298 and
    2)In-Line 1/8″ )3.5mm) Phone Jack (female).
    These come to about $6

I contacted Motorola and found that they do carry an adapter but did not tell me the price.

“We do have the adapter but is currently out of stock. The part# is SKN6225A. In order to locate this information you can contact our E-Commerce Team at: 866-BUY-MOTO (289-6686), in one week, where one of our agents will be glad to assist you.”

    • 335 ortizmro June 19, 2009 at 8:46 pm

That exact one in the link I provided works great. Fits perfectly in the 2.5mm jack of the phone. I just tested it again, and works. In fact, I just hooked it up to a 3.5mm to RCA adapter that goes to my stereo system (thru a line in), and I was able to listen to my phone’s FM radio thru my Kenwood stereo! Sound came out in all speakers (mono sound of course) but sounded great!

You must be in the pay of TracFone. I have had nothing but grief from their so called service and help. The delay for a connection is beyond belief, Bah Humbug. You did delude me! It was your blog that swayed my decision!

    • 337 pbushx2 June 19, 2009 at 9:50 pm

      Hello W Gibson.

Thanks for taking the time to contribute here. I do welcome all comments, so long as they’re respectful of myself and other readers, even if those comments convey an opinion contrary to my own.

What exactly is it that you don’t like about hte phone? I understand you’ve had a problem with customer service, is that correct? And was your call to customer service related to a problem with this particular phone model?

Perhaps you just needed a place to vent your frustration. If so, that’s fine. If you’d like some help resolving your problem, you very well might find that here as well, but we’ll need more information about the problem that’s causing your frustration.

  273. 338 DLiewer June 20, 2009 at 11:35 am

My brother is mentally disabled, and I bought him the 376g because of the price ($19.99 Target with DMFL) and the ease of Tracfone use. Your blog is dynamite – I read the whole thing (2 hrs) and reprogrammed his soft keys to reduce the possibility of accidentally browsing. i’ll just explain to him not to push the world button.

My problem is that in testing the new phone last night, I can text to it but it won’t receive calls – the caller gets a rapid busy signal. I opened a trouble ticket with Tracfone but they just said turn it off and on, make a local call (it does call out just fine). Did all that and still no ability to call the new Tracfone.

I guess i can wait til customer service opens Monday but I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

I did have trouble in the beginning activating the account and had to reprogram the phone but the Tracfone directions were easy and it went smoothly.

Is it likely something in the activation process rather than the phone?

    • 339 pbushx2 June 23, 2009 at 2:49 pm

      Hi Dliewer
Sorry for taking so long to respond – I spent most of my time offline for most of the last 3-4 days. Anyway, were you able to find a solution for your problem? I’ve never personally dealt with a problem like this, but to me it sounds like the problem is in the network, not the phone. I guess the best advice I can offer is to call Trac’s 800 number and ask them to help you out.

  274. 340 DLiewer June 22, 2009 at 10:04 am

Woo hoo – Tracfone customer service was terrific. The fellow explained that it was a routing problem and solved it by installing a new phone number. Since I had not given this number to anyone yet this was a simple solution. Interesting that I could text to the new phone no. but couldn’t call it.

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for this great website – I have learned so much by reading about all the issues and solutions here.

    • 341 pbushx2 June 23, 2009 at 3:18 pm

DLiewer – sorry, I posted the previous response before realizing you had followed up already. Thanks for taking the time to share with us! As you stated, hopefully it will help someone else down the road.

  275. 342 Paul Wright June 28, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Like most commenters, I am deeply indebted to this website for information that let me get my Tracfone W376G fully operational. I have written up a document that melds together all the info I have gathered from this blog (hopefully with all the proper attributions). Originally I was going to post it all here but decided that I wanted a way to go back and edit it if someone pointed our errors or I discovered other info. So, it is posted on my site at http://thewright.info/W376Ginfo.html with links back to here. I do not in any way want to detract from or compete with this site. I just hope that the compilation may be useful to someone.

I anyone finds errors or has suggestions for improvement, please post here and I will attempt to add them ASAP.

Wow, Paul, I’m amazed. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. It’s a valuable resource that I’m sure will help many other owners of this phone.

I’d like to do a separate blog post to call this to the attention of people who might not read all the comments. I’ll contact you directly, within the next day or maybe two, by email to discuss a few things first, though.

      Thanks again!

  276. 344 Del June 29, 2009 at 9:10 am

I have a new SIM card (changing from ATT to T-mobile based on comments I read here). I had intended to ask a few questions about sending pictures but Paul’s BLOG seems to amswer most of them. However, I have one more very simple question. When you enter an email addres in your phone book do you put it in the place that is usually used for a number or in the email line? Based on Paul’s blog, it appears that the email line will only appear if the number is in your phone book.

    • 345 ortizmro June 30, 2009 at 3:24 pm

For an entry that you already have in your phone book (as a number), you highlight the entry, then select the main menu button (center round button) and select Edit. Now hit the Top navigation arrow to quickly go to the bottom of the menu list to select MORE and select this. You will see Number and Email as choices. Select Email and then enter your email address. Note that this will generate a separate Phonebook entry for this contact with this email address.

For a new entry you just bring up your Phone book, hit the top navigation arrow to quickly go to the [New Entry] selection and select this. You see the two choices – Number and Email. Select Email and that will generate the Contact for Email.

The line for the Email address is clearly labeled Email, so there is no doubt where the Email address goes!

  277. 346 Paul Wright June 30, 2009 at 10:27 am

If you go to Phonebook, New Entry, it will offer to let you put in either a number or an email address.

    Subj: w376 – Motorola

I made an amazing discovery when I was unable to make a network connection at the American Airlines terminal and environs at the San Francisco Airport last night – probably applies to all of the handsets in the “W” series and maybe other Motorola models.

If you are unable to make a network connection, you can not access any other feature in the phone: phone book, FM radio, calandar, etc.
What idiot designed the phone to work in this mannor?

    • 348 Paul Wright June 30, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I’ve never done it exactly the way you describe but it doesn’t match with my experience. Several times in the last week I have been in areas with no bars of reception, thus no network access. And I have been using my old SIM to transfer phonebook data to the phone, and no network responds with the old SIM. In all cases I can use the camera and create messages (though not send them) and access the phone book.

I have a question about adding minutes to this phone. What is the best “deal”? should you buy a prepaid card, buy minutes from the tracfone site, or directly from the phone.

Also, what would be the best deal for number of minutes in terms of how much you pay for them. It’s a better deal since the minutes are doubled, but which denomination would be ideal? (60, 120, etc.)

    • 350 Alan July 20, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Hey, I usually but the 200 minute card for 39.99. I generally use a promo code for an aditional 60 minutes. 200 min doubled+ 60 minutes is 460 minutes for around $40.00. Less than 10 cents a minute… That is fair enough for me! Lasts me about 6 weeks if I am careful!

  280. 351 Paul Wright July 3, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Umm, typically the cost per minute goes down with the size of the card. OTOH, you don’t want your service to expire while you still have large numbers of unused minutes. (I doubt that’s likely to be much of a problem in most situations.) Perhaps in cases where you have a minutes bonus number a smaller card might prove to be cheaper per minute. AFAIK, you’ll just have to calculate it each time you go to buy.

If you have fairly regular minutes per month of use, you might be able to calculate some optimum purchase but I don’t know of any generalized process.

I can successfully send/receive texts to and from email accounts. However, when I receive a text from an email account, the sender shows only as a long number. I can’t see who it is from until I click to read it. I DO have the sender in my phonebook. Can that be changed so the sender name will be displayed??? I have a email gateway that is set to 121. Does that have anything to do w/ this problem?
    Thanks.

    • 353 ortizmro July 14, 2009 at 6:11 am

Kate – Don’t believe so. This is unfortunately how the phone handles messages that come thru its data services (which is how email messages are handled). The string of numbers you get is probably something like “1-010-100-348″ or something like that. I have not found a way to make this read as a sender name.

    • 354 pbushx2 July 14, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I don’t think there’s any way to change what shows up in your inbox, unfortunately.

  282. 355 bambu July 21, 2009 at 3:11 pm

How do I get rid of the beeping while on calls. I assume it is linked to the deduction of minutes but it makes me crazy.

    • 356 ortizmro July 23, 2009 at 5:51 am

bambu – It’s possible that the in call timer beep is turned on. Select the Main menu (center round button), then Settings, In Call Setup, In-Call Timer, then check the Beep setting. Set it to Off.

      • 357 KeyserFan August 7, 2009 at 8:12 am

Thanks for the great review. It was a big help.

I bought this phone 48 hours ago and I immediately ran into a problem. I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar before I get Tracfone to replace the set.

Bought the phone on Wednesday, got it activated and had my minutes switched. I spent four hours re-creating my address book from my other phone.

The next day, I took some photos to got with the address listings. I decided to download some ringtones. I selected two. The web browser immediately extracted the minutes and started the download. An error message came up – User not recognized, and the web browser froze. I pressed virtually every key and the screen would not change so I rebooted the phone.

The display came up blank. The phone was working. I could dial my work number and connect with no problem. I just couldn’t see anything on the screen.

I called Tracfone. The very polite customer service rep asked me to take out the battery and reboot. No change. He started the process of getting me a new phone. I was not amused as I had not yet had the phone 24 hours AND had spent hours setting it up to my liking.

I flipped the cover closed and open a couple of times and the display came on. I told the customer service rep it was okay.

This morning, after charging the phone, the same thing happened – the screen was blank. I flipped it around again, and eventually the screen came on.

I’m going to see what happens after it charges tonight and may get Tracfone to replace it. I had my other set for three years (a very simple Motorola flip phone) and never had a problem. I’m just reluctant to start over from scratch as well as be without a phone for the five days it will take to receive a new one from Tracfone.

Has anyone else had a problem with the display?

        Thanks,
        Keyser

  283. 358 pbushx2 August 7, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Keyser – I haven’t heard of a problem like that before. It sounds to me like you just got a ‘lemon.’ I think that a new handset will fix the problem.

  284. 359 Keyser August 7, 2009 at 5:42 pm

I fear you are right. I think that’s what I’m going to have to do. Thank you so much for the feedback.

  285. 360 Dr. Zorn August 10, 2009 at 9:41 am

    Hi,
I am happy with my w376g, for the most part – it serves it’s purpose.

Recently though, I’ve noticed my bars are dropping when I am home – I’m down to 1-3 when I used to get 4-5.
Also, my old nokia with it’s pull up antenna would work down the hill at my friends place when my w376g won’t. What’s up with that? An old Nokia (analog – I think) with a manual pull up antenna got better reception than the new digital phone? I can’t figure it out.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    • 361 pbushx2 August 10, 2009 at 3:10 pm

      Hi Dr. Zorn –
It could be your carrier. Go to your phone’s prepaid menu and navigate to the “sim number” or “sim serial number” option. Look at that number. It should start with 890. The next 3 digits will determine your carrier. If you have 890141, then your carrier is AT&T. if you have 890126, you have t-mobile. If your carrier is t-mobile, then that is probably the cause of the problem. If you have AT&T, then I don’t know what the problem might be – maybe a tower change, or a new building near your home that messes up the signal?

  286. 362 tpgross August 11, 2009 at 4:19 am

    Hi pbushx2,
I really appreciate the Part 1,2 and 3 blogs and everyone’s contributions. I spent about 4 hours yesterday reading everything and it has given me all the information I need before I even have the phone. Extremely valuable!

I presently have the really old Motorola 120 phone and decided to upgrade to the 376g after some 9 years using this phone. Tracfone has a deal on a refurbished 376g phone, double minutes for life and a 60 minute card (120 min when activated) for only $19.99. I ordered it yesterday directly from Tracfone (free shipping too).

I figure I can’t go wrong for $20. If it’s really bad, I’m only out $20 but hopefully I won’t lose my number in the process.

I will post how the refurbished phone works when and if I get it activated.

  287. 363 Danen August 13, 2009 at 11:38 am

Has anyone correlated the barcode numbers on the packaging to the SIM card in the phone? We recently bought two phones for gifts in a different zip code and I saw (from this forum) that the SIM cards may be different. Should I return them and order new ones online or just request new SIM cards ?

  288. 365 tpgross August 15, 2009 at 11:40 am

Here’s an update on my 376g purchase. Upgraded from the old Motorola V120 by purchasing a refurbished 376g from Tracfone website for $19.99 and a free 60 minute card. Free 3-day shipping which arrived 3 days later. It has the T-mobile sim card which actually works quite good. I get better reception than with my old phone. Here’s my experience so far:

    1) 1st call: to customer service using the general service number 1-800-867-7183 to activate the phone and transfer my phone number. 5 minute wait time and 30 minute call.
    2) 2nd call: to customer service using the general service number 1-800-867-7183 because the new phone hadn’t been activated after 6 hours. 60 minute wait time and didn’t connect with customer service.
    3) 3rd call: to escalated customer service number 1-800-339-9345. They had me enter a series of codes in the new phone and bingo it worked. 5 minute wait time and 20 minute call.
    4) 4th call: to escalated customer service number 1-800-339-9345 because my voice mail wasn’t working. They assigned a escalated ticket number and said it would be 4 hours before the fix. 5 minute wait time and 20 minute call.
    5) 5th call next morning: to escalated customer service number 1-800-339-9345 to check on voice mail because it still wasn’t working. An hour later on the phone, through some magic, it began working. No wait time and 60 minute call.

Now for how everything else that I got working and how I did it:

Pics from 376g to anyone’s email
Took a pic from phone and saved it to the storage area. Generated an MMS message and inserted pic from storage area. Sent it to an email address I had stored in the phone book. Success on the email end. Cost is from 2 to 3 units.

    Pics from email to 376g
Modified a jpeg photo so that it was about 46k in size. Simply attached it to the email and sent it to 10digitphone#@tmomail.net . Received the pic no problem and stored it on phone. Cost to retrieve is 2 to 3 units.

Text message from computer email to 376g
Generated an email message and simply sent it to 10digitphone#@tmomail.net . Received it no problem. Cost is 0.3 units.

Email message from 376g to computer email
This was a tricky one for me. It turns out that each person who sends an email to me generates a 4 digit number that is in the email address. I have to have that individual send me an email to 10digitphone#@tmomail.net and then I have to save that 4 digit number in my phone book. When I want to write an email to that person, I start the message with the email address in the message followed by the message. Then when I go to send the message I have to select the 4 digit code that is associated with that person from my phonebook. It works but kind of a pain in the ass because I need the 4 digit code associated with that individual. Cost is 0.3 units.

    Text messages to/from 376g
This SMS feature works great. No problem. Cost is 0.3 units.

    FM Radio
None of my headsets work so I’m going to Amazon per an earlier readers success story and ordering parts for about $9.00 total. Already checked the prices.

    So…..

It took about a day for me to get the 376g functional and becoming comfortable with all the new features. It required time and patience that’s for sure. Hope this information was helpful. I haven’t seen a lot of success stories on this site with the T-mobile sim card but so far I am happy with it.

    • 366 pbushx2 August 21, 2009 at 1:00 pm

tpgross – Thanks for the insight. HOpefully others can learn from it as I have.

Re: Email message from 376g to computer email

Something you might try to make this easier is to use the Email Gateway of the w376g. To access this entry of the phone from the home screen, select Messages, then press the center main menu button and select Message Setup, and then scroll down to Email Gateway. If there is an entry in there, don’t change it. If it is blank, then try putting an entry in there. What to put in there depends on what service you have:

If AT&T, then enter 121 or 111 (whichever ends up working).

If T-Mobile, then enter the 4 digit number that you get as the sender from any message that is sent to your phone from a computer email program. If that doesn’t work, then try 500.

After you enter the above as your Email Gateway, then what you should be able to do is send messages directly to people that are entered in your phonebook as email addresses. I have had T-Mobile (originally) and AT&T (currently) on my Tracfone, and the above procedures worked on my phone.

Don’t know of anyone else has posted this here, but there’s a Motorola PDF guide to the w376G:

    http://www.motorola.com/consumer/v/index.jsp?ps=y&itemID=4041586a336a0110VgnVCM1000008206b00a____&sectionName=SEC_TYP_00012&vgnextoid=38b5f7c0c1a0b010VgnVCM1000008206b00aRCRD&show=globalSupport&catID=6de76a7ce2ea0110VgnVCM1000008206b00a____&pg=PG_TYP_00002&productID=fea4492e98119110VgnVCM1000008206b00aRCRD

Sorry for the long URL, but I forgot how to do Tiny URL!

This PDF guide is a real guide, unlike the wastepaper you get with the phone. Hope this helps someone.

Is it normal that we cannot receive or make calls while the phone is charging???

  291. 371 pbushx2 August 26, 2009 at 9:35 am

    Hi Dave
I have never experienced that problem, and my w376g is currently inactive so I can’t test it out. I can’t say that I’ve ever tried using the phone while it was charging, though – I usually charge overnight. Maybe someone else could check on their active w376?

  292. 372 Sims Wright August 28, 2009 at 6:45 am

My W376G is able to call and receive calls while charging.

    • 373 dick blaine September 4, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Re: use of W376g while charging.

Between Aug 24 and Aug 28 there were several comments about using the W376g while charging. Following is my research:

      1. If the phone is powered on and the charging cable is then pluged in, all functions are operative, the icon of the battery blinks and the word “Charging” appears on the main screen.

      2. If the phone is powered off and the charging cable is pluged in, no function is operative other than the “END” key which, in this case, restarts the phone.

2a. Once the phone restarts, it connects to the network and all functions become available.

2b. If the “END” key is pressed again, the phone restarts again in charge only mode (no other function is available).

2c. If the “END” key is pressed again, the phone restarts and we are back to case 2a … ad infinium.

Summary: usage of the phone while charging depends on its initial state which can be changed by pressing the “END” key.

Someone has probably asked this question before, and I’m 99% sure that the answer will be in the negative, but I’m curious as to whether anyone has figured out how to use the W376G with one of the carriers like Sprint. I have a friend who lost his phone, and we thought it would be a cheap relacement for the duration of his contract until he can get a new one with renewal.

  294. 376 melinda September 8, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Hello, I just purchased in Sept 2009, a Motorola W376g direct from Tracfone, wanting to upgrade. Only my 2nd phone with them. When I powered it up, it said “service will end of minutes are not added by 01/01/2001″ I thought I was getting a new phone, but appears to be 9 years old. Does anybody know when this phone came out? I wanted to have a more current phone, hopefully get better reception etc. Also, the phone came with battery showing 2 bars charged. That also concerns me, my prior phone had no charge when I got it. Did they ship me a used phone? Are there newer W376g phones out there?

    Thanks for your help

    • 377 MK September 14, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Melinda, that’s the default setting. It will change once your phone has been activated.

    • 378 pbushx2 September 14, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Melinda – Don’t worry about either of these issues. The phone is programmed to show that time (01/01/01) until it is activated. As far as reception and audio quality, the w376g is second to none.
What kind of packaging did your phone come in? A clear plastic bubble, or a white cardboard rectangle box? If it’s in a bubble, it’s brand new. If cardboard, it is “refurbished.” Even if it’s refurbished, however, it should function as new. I’ve ordered dozens of them over the years and never had a problem with a refurbished TracFone or Net10 handset.

      • 379 Literature Lover September 14, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I’ve picked up six refurbs in the past year on the free phone with a 60 minute card deal and given them to friends and neighbors (I keep the cards, of course :) ), and everyone who received one has liked it as much as I do.

  295. 380 MK September 20, 2009 at 10:39 am

I was recently sent one of these (brand new, still in the package) as an “upgrade” for my refurbished LG-200c by Tracfone. Now, my LG is a great phone, but Verizon coverage here is spotty at best…AT&T just installed a new cell tower, so I was hoping to find something that would work with the ATT&T network.

Okay, this Motorola phone looks nice- but I really don’t like it. First of all, the battery dies sooo much sooner than my LG. I took them both off the charger at midnight; the Motorola was dead by 10am while my LG still held a full charge (neither phone was used during this time & both were kept on standby).

Secondly, it doesn’t have as many features as the LG does. It doesn’t seem to have GPS capabilities, or voice recognition. And it only has a few crappy ringtones installed, compared to the LG (I’m am not about to “buy” any from Tracfone– hey, I’m cheap).

Okay, it’s got a camera, while my LG doesn’t…but I honestly don’t care about that. And yeah, it’s got a web browser- but you can only go to Tracfone’s trainwreck of a website with it (or else get PENALIZED for attempting to go anywhere else!).

Thirdly, it doesn’t seem as well-made as my LG. It’s bigger, heavier, and clunkier. The LG just looks like it’s an overall better designed product.

Finally, it doesn’t get a friggin’ signal, even though there’s a brand new tower not 1/8 mile from my house. That defeats the entire freaking purpose of getting it in the first place!

Needless to say, I’m sending it back to Tracfone and keeping my LG. Verizon is going be building a tower here in a few months anyway, so I can suck it up & deal with the spotty coverage until then.

    • 381 ortizmro September 23, 2009 at 6:05 am

MK- Sorry you don’t like the phone. you should send it back – if the battery is losing power that quickly, something is defective either with the battery or with the phone. Normally, the battery life is better than that, I get at least 3 days before I need to recharge it and I complain about that because I am a light user of the phone.

You are right about the internet/web browser capabilities. I don’t think any phone is ideal for internet browsing. But most readers of this blog already know about this phone’s strengths and limitations when buying it – it does have great (maybe the best) sound quality when compared to other Tracfones. That feature is the single most important one to me and is why I still use this phone.

As far as not having a signal, it may be that your phone does not have an AT&T SIM card in it, it may have a T-Mobile SIM in it. You might want to check that out. Here is a post about how to check which type of SIM card you have:

      http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/21/more-tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/

      Good luck.

      • 382 pbushx2 September 25, 2009 at 3:03 pm

        MK –
Ortizmro’s advice is spot-on. One thing I would add – if it was constantly searching for a signal, that could have contributed to the poor battery life as well.

  296. 383 annapolishome September 23, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I saw in the review that others have had problems sending pictures from the 376g. Me too. Has there been any resolution by Tracfone for this problem. I did not read all the replys, etc. so I may have missed it in there.

  297. 385 johnsoned October 20, 2009 at 9:11 pm

I have a W376g tracfone and I cannot text to a text messaging service i.e. google 411 that uses a 5 digit number. I have tried a couple of different text messaging services that use a 5 digit number and what happens is that the message is sent and .3 units are deducted from my minutes, but I never receive a response. I have since discovered 411sms (http://411sms.com) which allows me to text to a 10 digit number (3109043113) and offers just about the same service as google 411 text (46645). My first question is; am I the only one having this problem and is there a fix?

  298. 386 pbushx2 October 21, 2009 at 3:13 pm

johnsoned – I have not heard of this problem before. Have you tried any services other than google?

    • 387 johnsoned October 21, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Yes, I tried another text messaging service, but unfortunately I can’t tell you the 5 digit number I used (I deleted it from my phone). While I was composing this message I decided to try another service, the weather channel will send you a forecast for your area if you text them your zip code and send it to 42278. I just tried this on my W376g and this time I got something different. Instead of receiving no response, I got this reply “Sorry, this service is unavailable for your current service plan” Off the top of my head, I don’t know of any other free text messaging services to try. If you would like to suggest one or two other ones, I’ll give them a try and let you know what happens.

  299. 388 dick blaine October 21, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Tracfone has crippled the ability to access any of the services which are accessed on other services with 5 digit numbers.

The alternate is to use your browser to link to the mobil versions of the websites.

  300. 389 pbushx2 October 22, 2009 at 6:16 pm

That’s odd, I’ve never heard of a problem with the 5-digit service numbers. I frequently text to GOOGL and, during the baseball season, MLBGO for scores.

johnsoned, maybe you could try texting “Angels” to MLBGO (65246), and see if that works for you.

I don’t know why Trac would want to restrict text messaging in any way, since it’s a source of profit for them.

    • 390 johnsoned October 22, 2009 at 8:12 pm

I texted “Angels” to MLBGO a few moments ago and received the same response as I received from the Weather Channel “Sorry, this service is unavailable for your current service plan”. I agree that this doesn’t make any sense, but I guess only Tracfone could explain it, if they choose to do so. I don’t suppose there is anyone from Tracfone who monitors this website who would be willing to explain what is going on here. I didn’t mention this in my first post, but my previous tracfone was a V170 and with that phone I was able to use a 5 digit number to send texts to google 411 and that’s why I was bewildered that, with what I thought was an upgraded phone, I could no longer use these services as I had in the past.

  301. 392 johnsoned October 25, 2009 at 10:28 am

I recently replaced my Motorola V170 Tracfone with a W376g. The transfer of my number and minutes to the new phone took longer than I would have liked but everything seems to be working as it should. My issue is with my old phone, I would like to recycle it with the hope that someone else might get some use out of it, and failing that maybe a few less ounces of toxic material are added to the growing pile. I have deleted all my personal information (phonebook etc.) from the unit but it still has the phone number that I transferred to the new phone in the Prepaid menu. The only option the phone gives me while displaying the number is to go back to the prepaid menu. Is there a way (Please don’t suggest calling customer service, I don’t need anymore aggravation in my life) to get this number out of there without pulling the SIM card.

    Ed J.

    • 393 pbushx2 November 4, 2009 at 10:23 am

Ed – I think your best best will be to just pull the SIM card, though I’m not positive that will get rid of the phone number. Whether it is reused as-is, or recycled, that SIM will be of no use now that you’ve deactivated it.

As far as where to send it, you may want to lookinto something called cell phones for soldiers. I don’t recall the details at the moment, but I know in the past I’ve donated phones to them. The organization somehow uses the phones to enable overseas soldiers to call home.

  302. 394 dick blaine November 19, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Although I received two email messges from PBush2 on 11/18 indicating that there are new comments at: http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2008/07/18/motorola-w376g-tracfone-review-part-3#comments, the last comment is dated Nov 4? So where are the comments after Nov 4? Maybe this is a trick that Internet Explorer 8 is playing on me!

    • 395 johnsoned November 20, 2009 at 12:14 pm

I have also been confused by these “new comments” messages , but I finally figured it out. The newest comments will not always appear at the end of the comments, the only time that will happen is when someone is replying to the very last comment. As to finding these comments, the only way I have been able to do it is by scrolling through the comments looking for the name of the person who made the comment/reply. This can take a while sometime since there are pages of comments galore, but I have been able to find each one eventually. It would be nice if there was some way to link directly to the comment. This comment should appear directly below your “So where are the comments” message.

      Happy Hunting

I found this info on the net and thought it might be helpful. Just got my phone so haven’t tried it yet.
I received the following very helpful message from TracFone:

Picture messages can be sent to an email address. To send a picture
message, please follow the steps below:

    1. Please press the MESSAGE key which is located to the right of the
    navigation keys.
    2. “Create” should be highlighted on your phone screen display. Now
press the key below the word SELECT.
    3. Go to “MMS Templates” and press the SELECT key.
    4. Go to the desired Option and press the SELECT key.
    5. The Image should be displayed on screen. Now press the OK key.
    6. “One Time Entry” should be highlighted. Press the SELECT key.
    7. Enter your email address and then press the OK key.
    8. Press the key below the word SEND.

  304. 397 ortizmro November 24, 2009 at 12:05 pm

johnsoned – I believe you posted that you had a problem using text messaging services (such as Google’s 466453). What service does your Tracfone have (the one that this did not work on)? I ask, because when my Tracfone had T-Mobile service, the text messaging services never worked. But I got my Tracfone service switched to AT&T (for other reasons, not because of this), and the Google text messaging service has worked fine since.

    • 398 johnsoned November 24, 2009 at 7:38 pm

I can text to a phone number but I cannot use text messaging services that require you to use 5 or 6 digit numbers e.g.:google 411 (466453), weather.com (42278), MLBGO (65246). At one point I did determine that my tracfone was on the T-Mobile network and, as you say, this may be the root of the problem since many tracfone users do not have this problem with text messaging services. When I talked to Elston (Tracfone Rep.) he told me that tracfone would not allow me to use free text messaging services because tracfone would not be able to generate any revenue from me for those same services they provide for a fee. By that time I had discovered 1-800-FREE411, I can text or call this service since it uses the same 10 digit number for both and as far as I can tell provides the same services as google 411.

  305. 399 Ed Mc December 21, 2009 at 12:48 am

Hey, thanks for all the information. Looking at replacing my Moto v176 with the Moto w376g. Not looking for any special ringtones, text messaging or anything fancy. Pretty much just use it for making/receiving calls 40 – 50 minutes per month. Think the camera feature might be handy for those occasional circumstances when I “wish I had one handy”. And the DMFL bonus is definitely a plus.

Just want to check a few facts-
    1. Found a few different procedures for getting pics from the phone to my PC using MMS. Is this pretty much reliable at this point?
    2. I can set up the phone to answer calls by pressing the “Send” button instead of just flipping the phone open, right?
    and
    3. The area code needs to be dialed even when making a local call?

    Ed

    • 400 pbushx2 December 21, 2009 at 2:33 pm

      Ed Mc,
Sending pics via mms can still be hit-and-miss, if you end up with a T-Mobile-based SIM card from TracFone. If it’s an AT&T SIM, you should be fine. Check out this post for sim card info:
      http://pbush14.wordpress.com/2009/08/19/tracfone-and-net10-sim-card-info/
I believe you can select how the calls are answered, but I don’t have one handy to check for sure. You might find an answer in the manual: http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/Migration/Mobile%20Phones/W376g%20-%20USA/_Documents/Static%20Files/W376g_UG_.pdf
I don’t believe you’ll have to dial the area code first if you’re dialing a local number. When I’m in my home area, and call a local number, I just dial the last 7 and it works for me – it was the same when I had the w376g as well.

      • 401 Ed Mc December 22, 2009 at 2:30 pm

        Thanks again for the info.
I’ve been reluctant to swap over my phone number and minutes from my Moto 176 to the new w376g since the 176 has served me well, but think I’m ready now. Like I said, the camera phone may come in handy and the DMFL sounds great.
I do have the AT&T sim card so hopefully things will work out OK. As to the other 2 issues, I do believe that I can answer the w376g either just by opening it or pushing the SEND button as you say and glad to hear that 7 digit phone number should work OK for local calls.
        Merry Christmas!
        Ed

  306. 402 Callie December 21, 2009 at 8:11 am

I agree, I like the external icons that show if you have a message. But, I keep my phone in my purse so I don’t see these icons and wish the phone would beep to alert me to a message. Do any of the Motorola phones do this??

  307. 404 Ed Mc December 27, 2009 at 9:37 am

Transferred my phone number & minutes over. Couldn’t get it to go through online; had to call Tracfones customer service.
When the minutes transferred over, should the minutes have doubled? Mine didn’t – they just gave me additional 10 minutes and 60 days of service. And I did not get the opportunity to use a promotional code.

  308. 407 Ed Mc December 27, 2009 at 9:52 am

Also, just tried a test call to my home phone WITH and WITHOUT the area code and “Call Failed”?

    • 408 ortizmro December 29, 2009 at 7:38 am

Ed Mc – If you are having technical issues with your phone, I suggest you email Elston at Tracfone. His email address is: elombillo(at)tracfone.com. I have had excellent service from him – just email him your issue, along with your phone’s phone number and serial number.

  310. 411 Leslie December 27, 2009 at 5:17 pm

Thank you for all the great info. I read a lot of reviews before asking for the W376 for Christmas, and I’m quite happy with it except for one thing. For some reason, I had thought that Tracfone allowed for the transfer of phonebooks from one cell phone to another (by transferring the SIM card to the new phone). When I asked customer support about phonebook transfer, they said there’s NOT a way to to do it. Do you have any knowledge to impart in this area? Thanks! And thanks for the blog. It’s really great.

    • 412 ortizmro December 29, 2009 at 8:00 am

Leslie – Once a Tracfone has been turned on and activated with a SIM card, that SIM card is locked to that phone and cannot be transferred to any other phone. If you saved your phone book entries onto the SIM card and used a SIM card reader to read and transfer the entries from one SIM card to another that might be a way to do it, but I have never done that.

  311. 413 Kathy December 28, 2009 at 7:50 am

I am pretty satisfied with my phone, i would like to know though how i can send pictures from my phone to my pc. i do not have a website, if anyone could please help me. it sure would be appreciated .. thank you
    Kathy

    • 414 ortizmro December 29, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Kathy – Click the Message button, Create, MMS, then type whatever text you want, then select the left soft key (Insert), Picture, Additional Storage Device, select the pic you want to send, add a caption if desired and click OK, then select a phone book entry (if your e-mail address is in your phone book – that’s how I have mine), or select One Time Entry and type in your email address. Then click OK and then send the message. It will deduct a minute right away, then .5 for each minute it takes to send the message. It’s never taken more than 2 minutes for mine to send a pic to my email address.
