Samsung T401g Review Video

I’ve completed my Samsung T401g review sequence. I’ve had a couple of requests for a video review so people can see some of the features and get a better idea of how they operate. I put together this little youtube video for that purpose. I hope you like it:

And here’s the direct link if for some reason the video doesn’t load above:

Thanks for the video! Great job! Your video reviews and reviews on your blog are THE best Tracfone and Net10 reviews.

I just got my T401G today and I am LOVING it! =)

The phone looks great, glad I held off on Motorola EM326g.

    Awesome Choice of Music Dude.

    Nate
We transferred my husbands phone from tracfone to Net10 about 10 months ago without a problem.

I don NOT like how you can not lock, reassign or disable the browser and as soon as you hit the Browser key it deducts a minute un like with the LG 600 where you have several seconds to hit end or flip it closed to prevent using minutes. The music player is lame because you can’t just play a song, you have to first create a play list which is limited to only 50 songs and 10 play lists, it won’t let you select by artist or genres.
You can’t transfer JAVA programs to it from you PC to get free games and apps like you can with the LG600.

The ringer is not loud enough compared to the LG600 all though it does have better MIDI ring tone sound then the LG600 which sounds like a cheap kids toy music keyboard but at least the LG600 is loud enough for noisy environments but thankfully the T 401G has vibrate mode but still Net10 should only release phones with loud ringers, all my other NET 10 phones have had loud ringers even the cheap $15 Nokia 1100b and $30 1600.
Why did they not use a Mini USB port for the charger an PC connection like Motorola and Blackberry and many others do or at least the current standard Micro USB?

It’s cool that it has a QWERTY keyboard and much larger screen then the LG600 and Motorola EM326g but I think I’d rather have the FM Tuner and flip phone that can have it’s Web Browser key disabled then be able to Text real easy.

It looks real cool and snooty but it’s not worth 80 bucks in my opinion I was lucky to get it for 40 at HH Greg.
Maybe I will learn to love it.

Dallas – those are all valid points. I will update my review to better indicate how the music is organized (or not). I do still think it’s a better player than the em326g, though.
On the bright side, since you got it for $40, it was basically just $10 when you subtract the cost of the free airtime.
I also hope you learn to love it, but I thank you for your input. I’ll try to update my reviews to reflect this input so that others are able to make informed decisions based on your experience.

One other thing, I’m sure you’ll be able to sell it (on eBay or something) if you do switch to another phone. It seems like there are a lot of people looking for it yet.

Well, I am starting to learn to love I’m not quite at “You’ll have to pry it out of my dead cold hands to get it from me” but I do like it a lot more then when I first got it and I did say to my self when I first got it that I could sell it on E-bay and probably get a good price for it since it’s so hard to find and in such demand.
I still don’t like the fact that the Browser Button can’t be locked or reassigned or that it does not have the option of prompting you if you want to connect, it is totally un acceptable that it deducts a minute the split second you hit the browser key and it should not even be called Web Access just Online content or service because it’s not the real Internet.
I also am disappointed that it won’t run JAVA programs copied to the phone from a PC but I don’t consider it a reason to get rid of it.
The Camcorder is crap but because it has one it can play videos so you can convert MPEGs AVIs and WMVs and other video formats to Cell Phone Video Format and watch videos on it. It has a great screen that is quite large and has good color and sharpness.
It has 48MBs (that’s more then some of my first hard drives and my 386 and 486 computers I had) of internal memory which is a lot for internal memory on a non smart phone which is why I wish it ran JAVA programs. Also I like the add number to call rejection list feature, the last phone I had that had this feature was the Nokia 1600.

Of course the slide out QWERTY Keyboard (one of the main the reasons I got it)is great, it makes it very easy to send Text Messages and add Contacts to the Phone Book or take down a quick note if you are in a store or something and want to remember a model number of a product you want to buy or the name of a book.
The 3 cents a text is great too.

The Music Player needs much improvement in it’s interface and control you can’t set up a play order of you songs as far as I can tell, I think it just plays the songs in alphabetical order. It does seem to have good sound when played through a Bluetooth Stereo Speaker System, it has nice rich full sound and sound better then my Verizon LG VX8360 which is a $290 phone if purchased with out a stinking contract.. I have no idea how the t401g sounds through headsets because I don’t have an adapter for the dumb proprietary plug it has on it.
Is the sound really that much worse on the Motorola EM326? Is the sound flat and lacking rich warm tonal quality?

        So I guess for 13.09(the total was 43.09and 300 minutes is 30 bucks)I got a good deal.

Can you compare this to the Motorola W375? (Size and weight-wise)

  9. 13 alex November 8, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Hey, I’m planning on buying a phone this coming week (and I don’t want to pay a thousand dollars to start a contract). I’ve been looking at the em326g, lg290c, t401g, and the r451c. Qwerty keyboards are my main temptations but I also want a phone with a music player, and the ability to run java programs (for free games and programs). If you have any suggestions to which phone is best, please let me know. Also those 3 cent text messages look appealing (but I’m still not sure if its worth trading java support for).

    • 14 Dallas November 9, 2009 at 9:41 am

No, it will NOT run Java Programs other then ones downloaded via the so called Web Browser. You can’t copy .jar files to it and run them like you can with the LG600g and Motorola EM326g.

I recently got this phone and I like it a lot, but I confused about the 3 cent text messaging. Is it supposed to deduct .3 minutes per text? Mine always deducts .5 minutes per text. I have called Net 10 twice about this already, and they told me that “despite what is on the box, if you read the terms and conditions, it says that every text deducts .5 minutes”. I proceeded to tell them that this was false advertising, and they told me that they could not legally comment on that. Am I doing something wrong? Should I call them again?

Thanks for showing off this phone. Saw it at Walmart but all they had was a dummy phone. This was a big help!

  12. 17 Dominic December 1, 2009 at 8:55 am

Jason: You need to call them back and argue with them. This happens when you TRANSFER a number instead of activating a NEW number with the t401g. I spent about 40 minutes on the phone with them and had to enter about 5 or 6 codes that consisted of about 15-20 characters each. In the end, the phone now subtracts only .3 and on top of that they asked how much I wasted during the call testing, and they refunded me 2 units for that as well. Not bad, but I wish I didn’t nave to waste 40 minutes of my life of the phone with them.
